Cow: WALTER LAMPL

Walter Lampl Company was a wholesale jewelry company which created bold and highly individualistic jewelry in a variety of materials, from karat gold and sterling silver to base metal with gold plating, frequently using semiprecious gemstones in their silver and plated jewelry. They were also a major manufacturer of charms. Their motto was, "Creators of the Unusual, As Usual." The company was begun in 1921 by Walter Lampl.Walter Lampl was born in the U.S. His parents immigrated to New York from Hungary. He began working for a jeweler who specialized in watch chains when he was a teenager. At age 25 he started his own business.

Based in New York, the company continued under his leadership until his premature death in 1945. His wife, Sylvia Lampl, inherited the company, which was then managed by his oldest son, Walter, Jr. until the company went out of business in 1959.

Cheri Says:
One of the things I find most interesting about Walter Lampl and his
company is the fact that several different types of collectors
discovered his work independently of each other and consider his work
extremely desirable in their separate areas of collecting. Long
before we in the jewelry community started to recognize and value his
work, the compact collectors, charm collectors, and military wings
collectors were already valuing his compacts, charms and wings very,
very highly. We actually were fairly late to jump on the bandwagon.
It just shows how perfect his taste was and how broad his interests
and talents were.

Walter Lampl used Swiss watches.
He lived across the street from Arde Bulova, heir to the
Bulova watch company. They were good friends.

Cheri Says:
I believe this is a World War II era piece, Jan. I think it was
created during Walter Sr.'s lifetime and the use of sterling suggests
1942-1945.
