MEXICAN SILVER album two

HECTOR AGUILAR: Hector Aguilar lived 1905-1986 and worked 1930-1965..during World War II many American jewelry companies had their jewelry made in Mexico because of the availability of cheap labor and sterling silver. In the U.S. the work force was limited and most metals were saved for wartime production. Coro formed a business relationship with Hector Aguilar and his studio made jewelry for them.He was influenced by William Spratling's early work with ranchero motifs and his earliest work was almost pure silver(980 or 990) His mark is a conjoined HA.Hector Aguilar had previously worked for Spratling's "Las Delicias" before opening his own studio.

MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR: Margot van Voorhies Carr Castillo (mark is Margot De Taxco) (1948-c.1975)(died in 1985) is known for a wide variety of styles and motifs inspired by Art Deco,Egyptian,Arts and Crafts,Art Nouveau & Mexican designs according to Warman's Jewelry by Christie Romero, 3rd edition.Her designs are superior and her pieces very collectible.Her mark consists of three elements: "Margot de Taxco" (or, rarely, "Margot of Taxco") in block letters on three lines; "Sterling Made in (or Hecho en) Mexico" in a circle around the Mexican government's spread eagle assay mark and the numeral 16 (or, occasionally, the numeral 1); and a design number (usually four digits). She spent the last years of her life in poverty until her death in 1985. "The ending is tragic and poignant, but she left behind a rich legacy and beautiful precious objects which shall continue to feed our imagination and aesthetic cravings for many years." quote from Fred Rezazadeh.

WILLIAM SPRATLING:(the correct way to pronounce Taxco is TAHS-co) And what would a discussion of Mexican jewelry be without including William Spratling(1900-1967) Spratling was an American who came to Mexico and eventually began designing jewelry in the town of Taxco. He made Taxco a major tourist destination famous for its silverwork..While his earliest designs were simple, they came to be more refined and stylized in his later years..Spratling used a variety of marks, the conjoined WS being one of them and Spratling Silver de Mexico being another..He has been referred to as "Father of Contemporary Silver"

FREDERICK DAVIS:(started in 1920's)...His work was unique in that he used simple, stylized obsidian(a dark natural glass formed by the cooling of molten lava)face designs which he used in necklaces bracelets and other forms..He also used amethyst quartz with silver which is my favorite combination..Later he used many of the traditional Mexican motifs.His mark was an F inside of a D..His pieces are relatively scarce so if you find any let us know!!!

BERNICE GOODSPEED:

ANTONIO PINEDA:(b.1919 d.2009)One of his early marks was AP in a circle then 'Silver by Tono', then 'Silver by Antonio', then the crown mark, Antonio Taxco in the shape of a crown...He used stones such as moonstones and topaz and also pearls.Please read an interview with Antonio Pineda at this link:

LOS CASTILLO:Four brothers-Don Antonio,Jorge(Chato),Miguel and Justo opened up their own shop,Los Castillo, in 1939. The last surviving brother Don Antonio died in 2000. In their work we see a very broad range...Their most famous design according to Warman's 3rd is Perfil de Perico(profile of parrot) which incorporates the techniques of married metals and stone inlay.

The pieces are spectacular and an interpretation of 40s style that is uniquely Mexican. 19 Margot de Taxco Modernist Sterling Clamper Bracelet Courtesy of Cheri Van Hoover	20 Close view of mark There were several incidents that led to the closure of Margot's business. First was a terrible fire in 1960.It closed her spectacular showroom and she had to relocate to off the zocalo(main jewelry sales area) to a new location on the highway to Mexico City (now called the Avenida Kennedy). Then she moved again in 1973 to a smaller shop nearby. Then her workshop unionized.She had difficulty with the yearly contract negotiations for higher wages and shorter hours. There was a strike in 1974 and she had to close the shop for several months. Then a number of the silversmiths began leaving the workshop and production dropped. Overhead remained high,and soon Margot was in deep debt. Eventually the government seized her business and sold it to pay the workers. Some of the design molds were given tovarious workers as payment for back wages.
