Miracle pendant Necklace

Courtesy of Debi Reed
"This is large 3-dimensional Miracle Anglo-Saxon design which always reminds me of a bishop's cross. This is truly a deep, 3-D piece, but the front image can't convey this enough. The craftsmen who made this design had to attach separately the two small side cross pieces which lie above the larger side arms of the cross. The style of animal ornament they have used to create the design around the central large faux ruby is very late in date - probably 10th/11th century (later Anglo-Saxon). There are interlaced animals and foliate details on each arm of the cross - the animal heads have lobed mouth parts and ears, and their bodies are double-contoured, all features found on real artefacts such as the Anglo-Saxon disc brooch found at Sutton (Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England) and the metal mounts of the Cammin Casket. Moreover it has been suggested that this type of ornament is an English equivalent of a late Viking style. There is a drawing of the ornament on the Sutton brooch at number 12 in the ANGLO-SAXON folder on my Miracle Collectors Group site. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/miraclecollectors" --Carole Morris, 08/08/13
