Charles Sidney “Sid” Bayless, 79, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012. Edit
"Sid was born Aug. 19, 1932, to Charles and Ardell Bayless in Clovis, N.M., and grew up in Canadian. He earned his master’s degree in education and a Bachelor of Business Administration from West Texas State University. Sid was a member of the Navy, where he was stationed on the USS Valley Forge aircraft carrier. He was a member of the naval Seabees. He retired as a commander after 25 years of service with the Naval Reserve. Sid had a lengthy career involving both business and education, starting as a stock controller for Diamond Shamrock Corp. Following Diamond Shamrock, he began work as an educator in Amarillo with the following positions: Amarillo Independent School District High School chemistry teacher, science department chairman, assistant principal of Austin Junior High School, principal of Crockett Junior High School and assistant superintendent of personnel for AISD. In 1978, he accepted the position of corporate manager for Mesa Petroleum Co. Before retiring, he worked as the law firm administrator for Culton, Morgan, Britain & White. Among his community involvement, he held the following positions: elder of Paramount Terrace Christian Church, now Hillside Christian; a member of Fisherman Sunday School Class for 42 years; Amarillo Bible Chair member; member of Amarillo Rotary West, where he served as president; Golden Spread Council; board president of Boy Scouts of America; Amarillo Community Center board of directors; Amarillo Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse board of directors; First Care board of directors; Faith City Mission board of directors; West Texas State University Alumni Association board of directors; and U.S. Naval Academy regional representative. Survivors include his wife, Leta Bayless; a son, Charles Barton Bayless and wife Kimberley Lynette Bayless, and their children, Sidney Lynette Bayless, Gracie Belle Bayless, Charles Samuel Bayless and Berkley Anne Bayless; and a daughter, Michel Olds and husband Scott Olds, and their two children, Michael Olds and Cody Olds." --admin, 01/29/12
