The bottom plate (the dial side; in watchmaker's parlance the back of a movement is the top and the dial side is the bottom, since that's how a movement sits when you work on it) especially, has been really beautifully opened up, organized in a series of semicircles, loops, curves, and full circles that provide a wonderful frame for the active components in the movement – the view is almost totally unobstructed.The case sits wide and flat on my 7-inch wrist, and its shape and finishing are quite complex, with short beveled lugs, a polished bezel surrounding the sapphire crystal, brushed flanks, and polished touch points for the chronograph pushers and crown. The back side reveals a display caseback and confirmation of this sporty chronograph's 100 meters of water resistance.
Being honest, this watch isn't for me. I just can't get on board with a skeletonized tourbillon in a 45mm titanium case. However, that doesn't mean someone else out there won't love this watch and everything it represents historically. It is genuinely refreshing for a historic brand such as Girard-Perregaux to keep building on their heritage in new replika Breitling and forward-looking ways.Update: an earlier version of this story mistakenly described the display of the modern Computron as a backlit LCD display. This watch is more expensive, at $3,990 on a strap or $4,360 on a bracelet.The 6240 also marks the first Daytona to have a high-contrast bezel in black acrylic. This material, unlike aluminum, gave the bezel a bit more of a sheen. The watch continued to utilize the Rolex 722 movement, much the same as the 6239.
