Saloons were more than just places to drink, and they served as social hubs for the working class as the country industrialized from the 1860s to the 1920s. Saloons were also known as "watering troughs," "bughouses," "cantinas," and other names.
The first saloon was established in Brown's Hole, Wyoming in 1822 to serve fur trappers. By 1880, saloons were thriving, with Leavenworth, Kansas having around 150 saloons and four wholesale liquor houses. Saloons were popular with a variety of customers, including cowboys, soldiers, lumberjacks, businessmen, lawmen, outlaws, miners, and gamblers. |
