Wooden .50 cal ammo box.  The standard WWI .30 cal box is shown for size comparison. .50 cal rounds fit perfectly inside.

Note slots where partition was originally placed. Two small holes are positioned through the slots to the outside of the box to affix partition.

I presume this was used as a tool box and the metal corner reinforcements were added later. The rounded leather handle is a mystery.  It looks like a replacement but the small wood plugs over the metal pins seem to have never been removed.

48rd ammo box used with Honeywell Mk18 hand cranked grenade launcher. Note distinctive embossed features on sides. This appears to be the standard Navy box for the Mk18

The Army also experimented with the Mk18 and issued a 24rd box that looked the same, but was half the height as this box.
