Week 1
Pups stabilize and Xena settles in enough to let us take puppy portraits!  We have selected a Nautical theme (the pups were born under the astrological sign "Aquarius") and for our litters we just gotta name our pups; sometimes better names are discovered down the road a piece, so names here are subject to change - but at least we have names to call them (instead of #1, #2 - how impersonal!)  Pups are developmentally in the neonatal period (from 1 to 13 days) a time of rapid neurological development (they grow before your eyes!)  Starting on day 3, pups are subjected to mild stress to enhance their development.

2/15/04 - the pups are 4 days old... Edit
Today is the last day we could consider docking the tails - and we DID consider it for the boyz as we know we will not be keeping any boyz this time around.  But hubby strongly objected and came down with the flu, so I nursed hubby instead of chopping tails (and really, since those tails are PERFECT, I don't know why I was even considering it!) 6 day old pups get their bedding changed... Edit
The first five days of a pup's life are the most critical - all their systems must go 'online' and their lungs and heart, as well as digestive organs, must come into play.  Some pups do not survive this transition, and typically the pups that fail to thrive are seen in the first 5 days.  Our pups are 6 days old now - past the critical 5 day mark -whew! Passel o' pups! Edit
Just a cute shot of the pup pack as they wait to be reinstalled in the nest.  The pups' weights have increased daily and all are doing fine. Edit

Xena chows down.... Edit
Jack is hanging on to one nipple while Xena gets up to eat her freshly prepared dinner.  We keep fresh, filtered water in the nest so it is always nearby, and she is fed 4 to 6 times per day; when her bowl is empty we refill it immediately!  She is currently being fed Innova Puppy Chow, with a food-based calcium tablet crushed up and mixed in to the food; we garnish with a sprinkle of garlic powder, some grated cheese and a bit of cheese cake (when in stock!) He fell off.... Edit
And all the pups quickly fall into slumber land as Xena continues to eat her dinner.  Pups at this age spend 90% of their time sleeping and 10% of their time feeding.  When they sleep they twitch as if they are having convulsions!  A still pup is abnormal at this stage, while a jerking and quivering sleeping pup is a pup that is developing properly!  (This can be hard to keep in mind when you watch them twitch!) 6 days old and time for the first nail clipping! Edit
This may be hard to see (it was hard to photograph!) but look at those tiny hooks on the end of Dauntless' paws! Edit

Look again! Edit
Teeny hooks all trimmed off!  Now, multiply - 10 in front (don't forget the dewclaws!) and 8 behind, that's 18 claws per pup, multiply by 7 pups and that's 56 snips!  Its important to trim the pups' claws as they can make many tiny bruises on their momma's teats and scratch them up and make tiny sores! Edit

Tools of the trade.... Edit
Digital scale and bowl to contain pup, books used to stabilize scale and also write on, pens and paper to make notes and keep records, regular human nail clipper to trim the nails.  It is important to note that NOT ALL DAMS ARE AS EASY GOING AS XENA!  Many dams would growl and bite if you tried to pull their pups from the nest and do the things you see here!  While Xena is very protective of her pups she is becoming more tolerant of strangers veiwing her pups; the super posessive attitude tends to mellow as the pups near 10 days old.
