AGATE:A fine grained,fibrous variety of chalcedony with colored bands or irregular clouding.Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock.Agate,being porous,is often dyed or stained.

1.MOSS AGATE:Green variety of agate. A chalcadony that has red, brown, black or green mosslike or dendritic(branching like a tree)markings.
2.BANDED AGATE:A fine grain chalcadony having its colors arranged in stripes of black, brown or white.

AMBER: A translucent fossilized tree resin that comes in many colors including shades of yellow,brown and orange.When small insects are encased in the amber it makes it more desireable. Rubbing amber against natural fabrics such as wool produces static electricity. Fake amber is made from plastics.

BALTIC AMBER:Amber from the Baltic states is older and the best. There are two kinds of amber,natural and reconstituted.

AMETHYST STONE:A form of the mineral quartz and is usually purple but can range in color from pale lavender to very deep reddish purple.

BLOODSTONE:Also called heliotrope,Bloodstone is an inexpensive type of chalcedony that is green with red highlights caused by iron oxide.Bloodstone is porous and relatively soft.

QUARTZ:A crystalline mineral that comes in many forms and many colors such as violet(amethyst),golden yellow(citrine),pink or peachish(rose quartz)etc. and colorless(rock crystal).Some types of quartz are:Chrysoprase,Sard,Sardonyx.Onyx,Carnelian,Flint,Jasper and Bloodstone.

CARNELIAN(CORNELIAN/CARNEOLE):A member of the chalcedony(quartz) family and ranges in color from light brownish red to deep transparent red.The color is due to iron.This translucent stone has a waxy luster.Carnelian is usually heat treated to produce color,and occasionally dyed to produce color.

CHRYSOPRASE:Most valued variety of the mineral chalcedony.Contains nickel,giving it its apple green color.

CITRINE:Semi-precious.From the French word "citron" meaning lemon and is a rare,yellow type of quartz that ranges in color from pale yellow to orange to golden brown. Citrine is sometimes produced by heating amethysts.

DIAMOND:Precious gemstones made of highly compressed carbon.One of the hardest materials known.The most sought after are the colorless and the fancy colors of blue,pink and red.Red diamonds are among the rarest of all gemstones.

RUBY:Precious stone and a member of the corundum family.Colors range from classic deep red to pink to purple to brown.Has been confused with red spinel and garnet.

AQUAMARINE:Transparent pale blue to light greenish blue variety of beryl.Related to Emerald,Aquamarine belongs to the gemstone family of Beryls with the color being more evenly distributed in Aquamarine than in Emerald.The more intense the color, the higher its value.

EMERALD:Green precious stone that belongs to the beryl group of stones that include aquamarines. All emeralds contain inclusions,which are evidence of the genuineness of the stone.Usually treated with colorless oil,wax or natural and synthetic resins into voids or dyed to improve appearance. Synthetic emeralds are hard to distinguish from natural emeralds.

SAPPHIRE:Precious gemstone(a type of corundum)found in a variety of colors from colorless to pink,orange,green,yellow,purple and black and of course blue.Sapphire is always heat treated to intensify,lighten or improve appearance.Six-sided asterism sometimes occur in star sapphires.

MOONSTONE:Semi-translucent(opalescent) stone made of albite and orthoclase feldspar,which cause light to scatter; the albite gives it the bluish color. Can be colorless,yellow,orange,gray or even reddish.Usually set as a cabochon.

EMERALD:A closer look at an Emerald, which is a green precious stone.Emeralds and all forms of beryl have large,perfect,six-sided crystals.The name Emerald is derived from the Greek word Smaragdos meaning "green stone".

GARNET:Of a group of semi-precious silicate stones that range in color from red to green(garnets occur in all colors but blue). Some garnets used as gemstones include the iron-aluminum dark red garnet and the lustrous Andradite which includes the valuable green demantoid garnet.

JADE:Two different minerals are known as Jade;Jadeite and Nephrite.Jade is a semi-precious stone that ranges in color from green to white to lilac to brown to almost black.Translucent Jade is is more highly valued than opaque Jade. Nephrite(a variety of the of the mineral actinolite) is also found in various shades of green,although darker.Other colors are gray,bluish gray and grayish white.

JASPER:A member of the chalcedony family.Opaque and fine grained, Jasper occurs in shades of red,yellow,green,greyish blue,brown and combinations of these.

LAPIS LAZULI:Semi-precious opaque stone composed mainly of lazurite and calcite.Dark blue with metalic patches(pyrite)and/or white streaks. Stones that are deep blue with small patches of pyrite are more valuable.

MALACHITE:An opaque semi-precious stone. It's banded light and dark green designs are one of a kind. Malachite is sometimes coated with a colorless wax,oil,or hardening agents to increase its durability and appearance.It is usually found in copper mines;malachite is is about 57% copper.Generally cabochon and set in silver.

MARCASITE:A shiny,metallic mineral with a chemical composition of Iron Sulfide.Often confused with pyrite or fool's gold..Used as a diamond substitute in times past.

MORGANITE:A transparent to translucent pink gemstone of the beryl family. Named after J.P. Morgan, an American industrialist and gem collector.Morganite is commonly heat treated to remove yellow components thereby producing a purer pink color.

OLIVINE:An unusually greenish mineral that is a complex silicate of magnesium and iron and used especially in refractories.Colors can be yellowish green,olive green,greenish black and reddish brown.

BLACK ONYX:Chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors.Onyx is a form of agate with parallel banding.Is found in black,brown gray and white.

OPAL:Semi-precious stone which is a mineral of hydrated silica and is a species of quartz.There are three major types of Opals:Common opal,opalescent precious opal(white or black with rainbowlike iridescence,and fire opal(milky stone that is firey orange to red in color with no opalescence).Many opals have a high water content-they can dry out and crack if not properly cared for.

RUBY ZOISITE:A green gemstone(Zoisite) with red spots,the spots being real rubies. Composed of a Calcium Aluminum Silicate,in which much substitution of the aluminum ion with Iron and Manganese occurs,causing the wide range of colors of this stone.

SPINAL:A very hard semi-precious stone composed of octahedral crystals.Spinal ranges in color from red to black,yellow,blue, purple,brown and dark green.Iron and chrome are components of spinal giving it its color.Spinal belongs to the feldspar species.

TIGER'S EYE:Quartz with rich yellow and golden brown stripes. It displays a vertical band like that of a cat's eye.When the color is a greenish grey they are called cat's eye. A golden yellow reflection on a brown stone is called a tiger's eye.

TIGER'S EYE:Type of chatoyant quartz.A yellowish-brown to reddish brown gemstone that has a silky luster with bands of yellow and brown that when viewed from the opposite direction the colors are reversed.
