Stuttgart Schloss-Rosenstein
No ancestral manor was harmed during its construction. Salucci apparently in one of his better moods. As for royal ghosts, Wilhelm I and Great Duchess Pawlowna have been spotted occasionally playing hide and seek among snowbound termite hills. Lady of Shalott attire a must. Best way to catch a pneumonia. Spouse infidelity - and with a mere commoner at that - propbably a contributing factor. To cut one's nose to spite your face. As for the African wild life props, Schloss Rosenstein houses today a natural history museum. Diorama side somewhat obsolete (yesteryear's multi-media shows). Careful set up not in question but somewhat pre David Attenborough standard.

In fairness, there are a few true trophies. The pregnant Ichthyosaurus of Solenhofen fame. I cannot judge the entomological section. Label pins for every occasion.  The popularity of the present day museum with 7th graders is due mainly to its general layout. Winding corridors around a central hall. Preprogramm...

Pediment, Doric portico and square pilasters. - [Crib 'pediment',  the word is actually derived from 'pyramid'. (Looks very much like a letter transposition to me.) Any Dali association with pedestrian foot stomping is gratuitous. Still maybe a good idea not to rent that upstairs flat to just anyone.]

Southern pediment with Ara pacis motive. In this case a Demeter crowned with a corona muralis (the civic symbol, not the military decoration). The Phrygian Roland. Did not save the place during the last war. The state of excellent preservation of the reliefs has a simply enough explanation: all fairly recent replacements.

[The Rosenstein bridge and railway tunnel beneath the castel will have been legitimate targets. Never hit. Very much in the nature of tunnels. In any case fairly close to mayor rail installations.]

Not sure what to make out of the anti-pigeon netting. Any better Parthenon has them nowadays. Could probably improvise a more or less knowledgeable explanation. Something in the line of perspective drawing aids for camera wielding visitors will probably do.

With amphorae and lyra. Hairdo, mien and bearing clearly on the stately side of Maenadic frency. (I personally cannot detect any stylistic difference between Jacques Louis David and anything produced in the Metternich period.)

Do not know what to make out of the EnBW chimney. The lady apparently similarly clueless. Should probably be placed on a turntable. That way she could also  gaze at the nightly beacon of the television tower at times.  Better Rosenstein views include the Rotenberg crypt and the Villa Berg. Light of sight connection.

[It is sometimes said that the residences and hunting lodges of certain profligate Rococo rules, pre Rosenstein timeframe,  served a higher purpose as trigonometric points and base lines. I do not know. No zero milestone has been so far discovered under the four poster of a ducal sleeping room. Max Eyth, a civilian engineer with literary ambitions, made good use of the selfsame idea in his Cheops' pyramid saga, bestseller anno 1902. Between Delbrück and Dänicken, the best of both worlds.]

Unterer Schlossgarten, Rossbändiger

Horse tamers, facing set. Finest Carrara marble even (plaque says so). Byline: Ludwig von Hofer. Credit for the first recorded set goes to Lysippus. Various inspired interpretations over the course of the centuries (Piazza del Quirinale, Piazza del Campidoglio et al). The rearing of the steeds became more pronounced over time. - Military backdrop: The Dioscurides duo was once frequently sighted in the upper airs near pitched battles, including sea battles. Some Spartan connection. (In any case vaguely Wodan type horsemen.) Variant face insets were initially permitted for Athenic victories. Same principle as with some present day coins. 'In hoc signo vinces' sightings became only popular by the time of Constantine. Original legend may however still be around. Rumor has it that two guys with white marble stallions did pass through Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century. A contract with Col. Cody nearly guarantied. Prize fighting in a pinch.

The tree trunk is accidental. A dynamic equilibrium does not require such prop ups. Otherwise it would not be dynamic. Will not go so far as to call it a false, trompe l'oeil type of equilibrium. Alternative solution, a bronze cast. Much higher yield strength.

Mittlerer Schlossgarten, Hauptbahnhof

Central Railway Station with underground S-Bahn connection. The Rosensteinpark, dipping its flanks into the Neckar, and the two Schlossgartens (Unterer and Mittlerer) form a single wedge with the central railway station at its apex. Well known invasion corridor for two wheeled traffic. - The true apex of the whole cascading park system will obviously be the two castles (Altes and Neues Schloss). One park (Oberer Schlossgarten) down the road. Location of the central railway station a mere afterthought.

The central railway station was built in Schönbrunn fashion, 1914-1916, just to show them. The undervalued 'Ephraimites' were not long in waiting. - Editor, always thought that the Ephraimites did circulate in Sanssouci territory.

The platform on top of the oversized control tower has dual functions. In times of peace it anchors a shining star, turntable set up, in times of war it can be equipped with light anti-aircraft guns. Will have given the civilian populati...

Mittlerer Schlossgarten, Eberhard im Barte

EBERHARD IM BARTE resting his head in the lap of a shepherd. (In the present case toned down to a mere lean-to pose.) The shepherd's staff means business for any unwary cutthroat.  Better known publicity stunt. Some rulers regard it as even more risky than the lion throat thing. Located close to the central railway station. By Paul Müller, 1881.  Nagging question, was the shepherd mesmerized beforehand. Justinus Kerner, author of the seminal ballade about a high level betting contest, was also somewhat of a specialist in parapsychological phenomena. Not uncritical in the Franklin sense by the way. Kerner may still have introduced this somewhat beautified picture of an Il Principe type ruler. Poetic inspiration goes its own ways. (Not sure what he would have made out of the David and king Saul material.) The graphic arts department just followed suite.

Stuttgart, Wilhelmspalais

Plaque of the royal couple. Thought at first that there was some kind of family resemblance with Nicolaus II. Most likely just my wayward imagination. Fall back position: Patina of a bygone era. The mother of Wilhelm II was the daughter of the third wife of Wilhelm I. Pawlowna was number two. Olga, the spouse of Charles I, was also Romanov. The marriage was however childless. The homosexuality of Charles I, known liasions, will have been a contributing factor. A place and Stadtbahn station in Stuttgart still bears her name. Again no bloodline. The bridal exchanges were however reciprocal so there could still be a connection the other way round.

First and secondary royal residences. Wilhelmspalais (one more Salucci creation) will have been the main residence, Schloss Rosenstein merely one of the available dachas. Solitude, Favorite and Monrepos (Ludwigsburg) and Villa Berg could be classified as crash pads. Not even counting mere hunting lodges (Bärenschlössle, Bebenhausen...

Stuttgart, Wilhelmspalais

19th century history of the pocket kingdom, brass tacks version: The newly created kingdom tried to profile itself as a stronghold of constitutional liberalism after the downfall of its mighty sponsor. (The demi God turned ogre. The time when the opaqueness did fall like scales from the rulers eyes corresponded in this particular case with the battle of Leipzig, Oct 1813.) The Rheinbund alliance lost much of its attractiveness at the time. As for the liberal orientation, suspect that is was simply an open character slot after the Restoration. Will however not deny that the rulers did take their 19th century vocation seriously. The two papers at their breakfast table were The Times, uninterrupted subscription from the mid 19th century if not earlier , and the business oriented Merkur. (I obviously do not know in how far these papers were actually read. But the bound folios, stack upon stack, still exist. Royal archives become normally incorporated in the regional archives of state. ...

Schlossplatz,  Jubiläumssäule

Postcard view: Concordia topped Jubiaumssäule in honor of Wilhelm I (the Pawlowna widower) by Knapp. Corinthian capitel with fresh produce elements. The supreme lady declined an interview, the cast of supporting dumbwaiters did just growl. See no reason for the grouchiness. Certainly beats balancing a bath tub all your life. Superior view for once. Not sure about the beach ball. In most classical versions, from David Crocket onward, you have to carry the thing on your head rather than balance yourself on it. Like an Atlas with a sour head. The misplaced head pad ruse.

Schlossplatz, historic view, ca 1900 (Belle Epoque). Watercolor? - Riding on the wrong side of the road apparently no problem. Some early form of mass transportation. The conductor had to reset a jumped contact wheel occasionally  (some special pole tool). The better known pantograph shape did come later. Somewhat mystified about the flat bad goods car. Electrically powered or does the presumptive driver just sit at the wrong end.

Landesmueum. One of the star attraction: the Hochdorf find. - Curator of the rival Daimler Museum, apologetically, we tired very hard to lay our hands on that one. Close but no cigar. The absence of a pivotal front axis made all the difference. The judge otherwise inclined to side with us. Unbroken chain of four wheeled CEO status symbols since the 5th century BC. Details (of the CEO vehicle, not of the fictitious court room battle) in National Geographic, March 1980 edition.

Alte-Kanzlei, Merkursäule

The Mercury is a carbon copy of the flying Hermes statue of Giambologna of 1580, commissioned by the Medici. Selfsame pose and gesture. This particular reproduction by Ludwig von Hofer dates from 1862.A pious interpretation of the deictic finger is generally accepted. A highly perched interlocutor in any case missing. The supporting column served original as water tower. 17th century assessment: Nobody but the duke will ever request tap water for his private bathroom. A fish bowl sized tank on top therefore more than sufficient.

The death skull look of the pillar's anthemion crown (roughly 'flower banded', an 'anthology' was original a posy) is accidental. The horizontal 'lotus' petals cast the hollow eye shadows. [Eberhard the Bearded will hardly have placed the heads of dwarf monks there to guard his private water supply. Not so sure about his neolithic ancestors, although bear skulls were then more commonly used.]

Administrative headquarters of duke Ulrich. (The present day IRS offices have been displaced in direction of the Rothebühlplatz.)

Ulrich's experiments with a value added tax and underweight weights were only a limited success (barely concealed failures). Gaispeter revolt. He come up with a better game plan after a prolonged period of banishment (1520-1534), impeachment as we would call it today. In essence: Systematic confiscation of church property (and incidentally willing to champion the cause of the reformation). As for the building, educated guess, a large scale 'escheat' operation needs some kind of logistics headquarter. Scope: More than 50% of all vineyards at the time in church hands. For the most part death bed donations, leased or sub leased on share cropping basis. Each of the larger orders and monasteries had their own administrat...

[There is no connection between the offset notation (Nonae, Idibus) - possibly a reminder of the ten finger count method - and the better known synchronisation problem, the subject matter of the Gregorian calender reform of 1582, first advocated by Nicolaus of Cusa more than a century earlier.]
