Me-109E
The ME 109 was "obsolete" when we got into the war.. no one told the Germans that.  although it entered service in 1937.. it was still equal to the American fights through the end of the war.

junkyard Cobra-w
the UH-1a Huey was to big and ungainly to be effective as a gunship (although, many of us ground pounders would strongly disagree!!), Bell modified the cabin on the Huey into a two man, light weight attack chopper called the Cobra.  Still in use today as the Super Cobra.. it is the best ground close support aircraft flying..

B24 Liberator
Built to replace the B-17 Flying Fortress, it had a longer range and larger bomb load, but was more difficult to fly and less resilient to battle damage. It was the first heave bomber with tricycle landing gear.

AD-1 Skyraider
In Vietnam, when you were pinned down by enemy fire, the sound to the Sky Raider radial engine was sweet music indeed.  It carried more ordinance that a squadron of WWII B-17 bombers, and the fuel to remain on station for hours providing fire support to the ground troops.
