This album is available to the public to view. All I ask in return is that you sign the guestbook and let me know how you ended up here...
This is basically a ongoing tutorial explaining my experience/learning curve with Humminbird Side imaging technology, starting with my initial purchase of a 997 in 2008. I have since moved to 1100 series units, with a trolling motor application for Side Imaging also, starting with pictures 110-118 on how to rig the transducer to the Terrova. 2015: I now run and Onix 10 at the console so you will see some different screen options, and recently upgrade my bow unit to a H12 SI.
While 2-3 mph may be optimum viewing speed, you can see fish at .01 and as high as 10 mph in Side Imaging.I try experiment and learn something new every trip out with my equipment. If you are ever going to get good with your equipment, you need to use it.
The key to getting good results, is to take the time to properly set up your transducer in the beginning. This will pay dividends down the road.. You cannot expect high performance out of your unit, if your transducer installation is not up to speed.

2 Fast water below dam, slightly below the 400 ft restriction. Note the swirl effect on the bottom right. This is the remains of a turn I needed to do to get straight. Side imaging, needs to be done in as straight of a line as possible, or the screen distorts the picture. When turning the side imaging, its alot like running plugs on a turn, the outside one runs faster, while the inside one slows down. Same thing with side imagery.

4 Here is a great picture of 9 walleyes on the left and 4 on the right. Take note of the distance the shadow is behind the fish. This is a function of how high the fish is off the bottom. Note the appearance of the shadow of the fish on the right side across from the date. The shapes of these two fish are definitely walleyes. 19 Another interesting bottom feature that shows the power of Side Imaging. If you look at the "blip" in the 2D sonar just above the m in mph, you gtet a good idea of the information that Side Image technology can provide .
20 Here is a series of 3 consecutive pictures, all taken within about 4 boat lengths. Note the depth, rough texture on the right side and the smooth bottom texture in the left. 106 The following series of pictures will show how to mount a HDSI 180T side imaging transducer to a MinnKota Terrova with a slick approach to the cabling issue. This picture shows the IPilot head removed and the three wires diconnected for removal of the head.
107 Remove the thru bolt that attaches the head to the shaft
108 Remove the head from the shaft. you should have a red, black and smal brown wire and the US2 cord coming out of the shaft
109 Thread the HDSI cable thru the steering drive.
110 Wire tie the cable to the motor mount in a position to line up with the slot in the shaft.
111 Slide the shaft back into the steering assembly.
112 Thread the drive collet onto the shaft with all 5 cables.
113 I then took dabs of silicone caulk and attached the cable in about 6 spots going up the shaft. I taped them with electrical tape, and left it overnight.
114 Mount the head back onto the unit like it was before. Wire tie the cable to the top of the shaft and thread it back down the coiled cord feeding the Terrova power, which will place it near the Humminbird unit when in use. I also have a Ram mount assembly to tie the shaft down when trailering or rough water.
115 I like Humminbirds!

126 Here is my first attempt at setting my unit up for verticle jigging. You can clearly see the jig in both types of sonar, 2D (83/200 khz combo) and Down Imaging. Because the 2D sonar cone is larger, the fish (big red arc) shows up well in DI also. Because of the small beam of DI, it is hard to get the jig to show up, as it has to be in near perfect position to print out. I was pretty impressed with this application. Enough to make me go deeper more often... Not a chance!
127 Here is a combination shot of 2D and Down imaging. There is considerable difference in what a fish looks like between the two options. On the DI screen the white vertical lines are when my trolling motor was running, and the clear area is where it was shut off. I'm ok with a little interference, as long as I can see thru it.
128 Here is another 2D/Di image where you see the jig (1/4 oz) fading in and out of the DI screen. On the 2D side, you can see where I set the hook on a fish and missed it(above the 6 in 36.9) and then settled the jig back down on the right.
129 Another image at 7 mph of walleyes.
130 High speed imaging of walleyes at7.1 mph
131 Here is an image of what walleyes look like in Side Imaging at 10.1 miles per hour.
132 Here is an abrupt point that is 2 feet deep on top, surrounded be 25 feet. The crosshairs show how you can accurately mark the tip of a point like this.

Hello there! Quick question that's entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird when viewing from my apple iphone.
I'm trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to resolve this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share. Appreciate it! - http://bit.ly/3KZaVET | http://bit.ly/3KZaVET, Wed, 23 Mar 2022 8:04AM

Didn't get a chance to get thru all of them yet, will be back as I learn more about SI. This will drastically lessen the learning curve for me. Incredible screen shots. Thank you very much Rollie!!

Bob. I sent you an email. The plug of the Onix is too large to fit inside the shafts of the Terrova and the cable is too large for the slot on the shafts. Not many good options for the Onix up front unfortunately. - Rollie, Thu, 17 Nov 2016 9:08AM
Enjoyed the photos, mainly was looking at how you ran cable on Terrova. I am looking to do same with Onix SI. Do you know if it can work as well re cable diameter? Thanks - Bob R, Wed, 16 Nov 2016 11:55AM
