Welcome to the Baxter Chronicles, the life and times of this beautiful rattie boy!
Download MOV 2 Oh yes, he's also blind, but remarkably that doesn't seem to get in his way. Look at that happy tail!
Baxter is about 10 years old, weighs 22 lbs, and is in excellent health. He was already blind, but he recently underwent surgery to remove his eyes, which were painful for him because of advanced stages of glaucoma. He is now pain-free and a very happy boy.
Everyone who meets him agrees that Baxter is an absolute sweetheart!
Baxter is very gentle and well-mannered. He does bark when he hears noises on a walk, or when he meets strangers, but his tail is wagging the whole time and he’s really just saying “Hi! Who are you?!” Bax is the official greeter for every guest who comes to the house.
This picture was taken prior to his surgery, but the behavior hasn't changed. This is his “please pet me” pose. He can’t see you, but he knows YOU can see HIM, and this is the way he asks for attention now!
Baxter is very zen and will happily pass the day snuggled in various comfy spots. He has managed to find several that are to his liking - and many of them are on top of various pieces of furniture. He jumps up and down with the greatest of ease - that daring young pup on the different settees! Ok - middle aged!
The top of this chair is another of Bax’s “just right” places.
Here’s another “just right” spot. Notice the pattern?!
Don’t let those pictures of Baxter snoozing give you the wrong impression! He loves his walks!
Download MOV 11 He walks around the neighborhood every day and often leads the pack!
One of Bax's favorite things to do is walk on any of the nearby hiking trails. On these walks he's living his best life and you'd never know he was blind. Bonus - everyone gets to ride in the car, and that’s another one of Bax’s favorite things to do.
Once we're on the trail, foster mom lets him off leash and he's in his element. He moves on the trails with complete confidence, and follows voice signals and the movement of the pack to keep going.
Baxter also enjoys checking out the yard. He gets several yard breaks a day and a fenced yard makes it easy to let him out when a leash walk isn't possible. He's figured out the fence line and wanders happily about until it's time to come inside.
Checking out the yard.
Yes, he's still checking out the yard!
Baxter loves loves loves to lie in the sun.
He'll happily soak up the rays long after the other dogs have come in so foster mom pays attention to make sure he doesn't stay out too long.
Handing out treats is a sure fire way to get Bax inside. Everyone lines up for a goody, and Bax will wait until he gets one. He doesn't crowd the others or try to steal their treats, but he loves all treats, crunchy, chewy, or soft! Baxter is extremely gentle in taking the treat from foster mom's hand.
Bax doesn't seem to have much interest in toys, but he sometimes likes chewing on an antler or nylabone. He’s not destructive and he never chews on anything else.
After all that fresh air and exercise, Baxter likes to indulge in a little yoga. What a perfect downward dog!
As the day's adventures wind down, Baxter is happy to settle down in the right spot for a snooze. He'll get out of bed for dinner, and then curl back up without a care in the world.
The right spot often means cuddling as close as he can get to foster mom. In this picture, he is on the back of the couch with his head on her shoulder.
As self-sufficient as he is, Bax enjoys the company of his foster siblings. He follows their lead on whatever is happening in the house, takes his cues from them on walks, and likes knowing they are close by. They all pile together in the car for outings, they help him find his way in new surroundings, and they keep him from feeling lonely and isolated. Bax will need at least one other canine sibling in his “furever” home.
This just may be the best of all possible worlds, snuggled with his foster sis next to foster mom. This photo was also taken just prior to his surgery, but he’s as cuddly as ever.
At one time, somebody somewhere loved this boy. He's been through some tough times, but in New Rattitude's care he has learned that life can be good again. He’s such a love - he deserves a happy-ever-after ending with a family who knows how lucky they are to have him and who will enjoy helping him get the most out of life. He's hoping to meet you soon!
What a treasure! I have made application and hope we will be approved. Looking forward to walking a doggie again early morning! - Carol, Mon, 28 Feb 2022 11:11AM
