Each year, Killdeer return to lay and hatch their young. They make their nest on top the rocks. When the chicks hatch they come out running!
During incubation, IF you go near a nest, the mother and father both pretend to be injured to lure you away from the nest. You may not even see the nest they are so well camoflouged.

Can you spot the nest?
Parent on duty.
Can you see the eggs?
Harder to spot the eggs?
Now I am too close and parent runs away...
quivering here like it's wounded...
throwing down her wings...
charging me to make sure I see HER and NOT the nest...
acting injured...
watching me for my next move...
beating the ground with her wings...
then she scurries away like she is hurt.
I stand over the nest to take this shot...
and parent (not sure if this is mom or dad) gets about 3 feet from me.
No eggs or birds were hurt during this photo session.
June 11, 2007 We discover the chicks have hatched!
Parent guarding the clutch.
Then it runs to the nest stepping on the baby and baby does not flinch.
Hey, there were 4 eggs ???
WEHRE's the 4th baby ???
The babies do not move a fuzzy feather when approached.
Ah Ha...one has escaped and alone.
Ok it is like a sitting duck...no cover...sooooo
I pick it up...still does not move or struggle.
See how little this puff ball is???
So sweet. I am taking it back to the nest.
Golly how cute.
Baby was delivered back to the nest with its' siblings...parent bird cussed me out then went to sit on her Deer Chicks :)
