1 H. Allen Jerkens is an "old school" trainer. His horses have upset many big race favorites and he's earned the nickname, "The Giant Killer". He's getting on in years and may not be in the game for much longer. With the Belmont Stakes rapidly approaching and the future of the New York Racing Association in doubt, my boss asked me to upgrade his barn sign. The old one had stick-on letters, which I traced with a magic marker and then proceeded to sand away the old paint, bird droppings and other detritus that occurs around stables.
| 2 I didn't get a chance to take any "Before" pictures. But using the magic marker was a boo-boo, since I used latex paint it ran and created an indelible image that the paint wouldn't cover. I did a lot of retouching using oil based paint, which wasn't the same shade of white as the latex, and also looked blothcy. Yikes! After a ton of touch-up, I did the letters in Blue and the outline in orange, Jerkens's stable colors.
| 3 "The Run For The Roses" is a term that's often used in thoroughbred racing, so I decorated the stripe with some roses and vines. I'm pleased with the outcome, not being a master of the pinstriping brush.
