My passenger, John Walmsley, would be with me for the remainder of the Alpine tour. Mary, now relegated to the back seat, continued to take the wonderful photographs that have been the mainstay of my memory of Alpine 2003. She left the next day. Photo Mary Landry

enlarge 72KB, 800x533 16 6 July 2003. Well wishers watched us climb at several points along the way. This road is not used by regular traffic, but has been opened especially for automobile clubs. The surface is gravel and the hairpins were the steepest (20%-28%) on the whole Alpine 2003 route. With four up, 2442 made the climb (in 1st gear) with no hesitation. Photo Mary Landry
