These beads should be pearls. I think what happened which is quite common it that the peals and the head pins got verigris. Someone removed them to clean them and the coating fell off and the when rebeaded the head pins are not done correctly.
Now it is worth noting that D&E did make this same design without beads and the one without beads does not have the rivets on the back.
