Antigua 2004 - Marine Life
Pictures from our Antigua 2004 vacation 08/03 - 08/12.  Taken while snorkelling from the beach on Runaway Bay.
All photos were taken with an Olympus Stylus 300 digital camera using the Olympus PT-016 underwater case.  Some enhancements were made using Digital Image Pro software.
I would recommend anyone who wants to take underwater photos to use a digital camera instead of the disposable one-time use waterproof cameras.  The quality is so much better that it is well worth the extra expense.  We brought a laptop with us so I could upload and look at the photos after taking them in order to make adjustments in how I take the photos the next day.

No idea what these were.  They were stuck on the rocks the first day we were snorkelling.  They were gone after the first day.

Sample of coral at Runaway Bay were we snorkelled.  Not spectacular in any way, but it supported quite a variety of fish.

Can you see this fish's head peeking out from under the sand?

Here's what that fish looks like.  It is a Sand Diver.  It burrows under the sand.

Giant squids were lurking about the first 2 days we snorkelled.  They were huge!  At first we couldn't figure out what they were.  There were 12 or so of them hanging around.

They were quite fascinating.  They look liked aliens from outer space!

I finally got close to photograph one.  Really neat to look at.  Good thing they didn't ink me.

This is a very popular fish that we've seen in the waters of Antigua.  I believe it is a schoolmaster fish.

Ok, this picture got cutoff.  I was still trying to get used to the camera when I took this photo.  But look at the detail on the scales!

Another picture of this fish.  Also see the big blue tang in the back on it's side?  It's nibbling on the plants on the rock.

On our last day of snorkelling we saw an octopus!  What a delight that was.  At first it was stuck on the rock and we didn't even notice it.  Until Jerry called me over and said, "There's starfish here".  Haha.  Obviously the guy hasn't seen a starfish in person!!

Isn't this neat?  You can see his eyes in this photo.

A conch with his head poking out.  Another neat creature that we saw.  Actually we saw 3 of these conchs.  If we only knew how to cook them!  LOL.

Here's the Conch getting mad at me for picking him up.  He uses that foot thing that is sticking out to move about the ocean floor.  He kind of uses it to hop sideways.  Pretty neat to watch.

Here's a dead Caribbean spiny lobster that the fish were feasting on.  Too bad I hadn't come across it while it was alive.  It would have made for a delicious supper.

Not sure what this fish is called.  It squishes itself by the bottom of the rocks and blends in so well you could hardly tell it was a fish.

Enlarge photo 22

Here's another photo of this fish when he actually is not that squished into the rock.  He looks like a mean fish!

I loved this huge Blue Tang.  I kept following it around, although it was quite shy.  I finally got this good photo of it.

I think these are also Blue Tang fish.

The fish with 3 spots is a Goatfish

Not sure what the fish with 1 spot is called...

This orange fish was very colorful.  I don't know what kind of fish it is.  It is difficult to identify all these fish as they aren't in my fish book that I have!  =(

Another photo of this colorful fish.  It's got a really neat pattern.  The neon blue markings are neat!

Enlarge photo 37

I loved this fish!  It had such a smiley face.  When it looked straight at you it looked like it was smiling.  =)

I think this is a Yellowtail fish.

We call the one on the left a zebra fish, though I'm not sure what it really is.  The smiley fish is scratching it's side on the sand, that's why it is sideways.  Haha.

Yikes!  A jellyfish!  We saw quite a few jellies during our stay.  I guess it is jellyfish season.  They were pretty to look at with their purplish color.  But we kept having to look around while snorkelling to make sure we didn't have jellies for company.

Aren't they mesmerizing?!
