The LM101 feels like – okay, let’s just say it is – less of a conventional wristwatch and more of a gorgeous display case for a collection of ticking gears and spinning wheels. Likewise, the two floating white dials hover above each colorful and textured baseplate for an elegant effect that has come to define the look and function of the Legacy Machine series.That morning, September 11, 2001 – when the sky in New York City was so impossibly blue it seemed you could see forever. A sky so intense and rare in its limitless visibility that the conditions have a special name. Pilots call it “severe clear.”The Oscars are generally more sartorially conservative than the Grammys or SAG Awards. This is the night when nominees will likely opt for a glamorous gown à la Julia Roberts in Valentino (circa 2001) or a sharp black tux in the vein of peak '90s Jack Nicholson. If we're lucky, we'll get a fashion-forward take on black tie from the likes of Colman Domingo—or, if I'm really lucky, a 2025 version of Björk's swan dress.
Launched in the late 1980s, the reference 16600 is virtually identical to the late “Triple Six,” maintaining its sapphire crystal and its 1,220 meter water resistance. Over its remarkably long production period, the luminous material evolved from tritium to Luminova, and then to SuperLuminova. You can easily tell which is which by looking at the bottom of the dial – T Swiss T<25 indicates Tritium, Swiss indicates Luminova, and Swiss Made indicates SuperLuminova. Not too tough, right?On my 7-inch wrist, the S302 is just about perfect and its proportions feel replica Bell & Ross as though all of the dimensions are nicely balanced. With its matte black bezel and dial and the brown accents, the S302 instantly reminded me of the latest 007 LE from Omega, but here the accents are less brown and more tan. In short, I think it's a fantastic-looking watch that looks even better on wrist.But technically this isn't a Speedmaster and technically it didn't go all the way to space. Instead, it's a "close enough" achievement for a "close enough" watch that everyone unequivocally accepts as the Watch of the Year for 2022. Sounds perfect to me.
