enlarge 197KB, 900x351 46 Banyan Tree in Lahaina The Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) is a type of fig tree. Typically, the seed sprouts on a host plant that is eventually enveloped and strangled. The banyan eventually grows aerial roots that hang to the ground, taking root and forming what look like a grove of trees. However, it is actually one interconnected system of prop roots around the initial trunk.
