enlarge 52KB, 640x421 58 Highway 37, on the west side of Haleakala This stretch of road was a welcome sight, after having driven, clockwise, the second half of the Highway to Hana. The rumor is that you can't take rental cars on the road past Hana, or that you will need a four wheel drive vehicle. Neither are necessarily true. If you've driven the road west of Hana you'll understand why this stretch of road was a welcome sight! On this imageevent.com website, there is another folder of photographs from the Highway to Hana.

enlarge 115KB, 720x367 80 Trees off Sugar Beach This scene is nestled between N. Kihei Road and Maalaea Bay, just off of Sugar Beach. West Maui Mountain is seen in the distance.
enlarge 78KB, 720x337 81 Road to Lahaina Pali Trail This "road" leads about half a mile off of Honoapiilani Highway, to a parking area for those inclined to hike Lahaina Pali Trail. Navigating this little road meant keeping the car tires on the high center of the road and the side of the road to keep from high centering the vehicle. The trick was to do this without scraping the side of the car against the large lava boulders that line the roadway, evidently to keep hikers from driving all over the private field.
enlarge 54KB, 720x330 82 Road to Lahaina Pali Trail The ideal way to hike Lahaina Pali Trail is to park a car on one side of the mountain and then have someone drop you off on the other side. Not having done this, I hiked up the east side of the mountain. At the top I came across a young couple who had hiked up from the west side and were getting ready to hike back down. They agreed to drive me around to my car when we reached the bottom. The west side of the mountain has richer color (red rock and lush green vegetation) and great views of the island, Lanai. The east side of the mountain is much more arid, something like hiking in Wyoming or Nebraska.
enlarge 34KB, 720x244 83 Haleakala Volcano Each morning and evening we were treated to a show of light and shadow, with the rising, or setting, sun casting a glow on the ancient volcano.
enlarge 70KB, 720x426 84 Kalama Beach Park, looking south-4703 If you look carefully you can see the cinder cone hill, Puu Olai, on the western tip of south Maui. It also goes by the local names "Red Hill" and "Earthquake Hill", due to an oral tradition that the earth shook when this cone erupted. It's quite a lava hill, at 340 feet high.
enlarge 161KB, 720x447 85 Crab & Moss I believe this is a Alamihi Crab. Not being an expert on crabs, or crabby people, you might want to educate me with a comment if you happen to know what it is. There were a lot of them on the lava rocks along the shore of Maalaea Bay.

enlarge 164KB, 425x640 90 View of Puu Olai from Wailea Beach Park-
enlarge 48KB, 720x257 91 Pau Olai Puu Olai, on the western tip of south Maui is a cinder cone mount created by an eruption either in the 14th or 17th century, depending on whether you go by oral tradition, or scientific dating. It also goes by the local names "Red Hill" and "Earthquake Hill". Earthquake Hill, due to an oral tradition that the earth shook (which it probably did) when this cone was formed. It's quite a lava hill, at 340 feet high.

enlarge 129KB, 640x406 96 Hanoapiilani Highway There are a number of similar tree shrouded roads on Maui.
enlarge 46KB, 640x409 97 Kahului Bay This view of Kahului, on the north shore of Maui, was taken just before we landed at Kahului Airport, visible in the foreground.
enlarge 38KB, 720x263 98 Maui Isthmus Aerial The cloud shrouds Western Maui Mountain, the older of the two volcanoes that make up Maui. The isthmus plain that separates the mountains is only about six miles across.
enlarge 53KB, 640x425 99 Maalaea Bay & Sugar Beach Aerial Kealia Pond is the large brownish colored water to the left of the beach. I was fortunate to have captured this photograph as were landing in Maui, without my knowing the significance of the location. It is part of the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, which covers 691 acres. A number of endangered species are found there.

enlarge 82KB, 640x425 103 Early Morning It must have been some storm that toppled this tree. I wish I knew how long it's weathered the constant waves that wash at it's limbs.
enlarge 105KB, 720x388 104 Glimpse of the Needle This view is as one approaches the needle from the trail on the opposite side of the river from the Needle parking area.
enlarge 108KB, 640x480 105 The Needle The Needle rises 1,200 feet from the river near it's base. Actually, if seen from the air it is a ridge. In 1790, the Battle of Kepaniwai took place at this location. Kamehameha the Great defeated Kalanikūpule and the Maui army to gain control of the islands.
enlarge 108KB, 720x436 106 The Needle Closeup The Needle is listed as a National Natural Landmark.
enlarge 121KB, 640x456 107 Maui Dove Maui's Spotted Dove is somewhat smaller than the Mourning doves on the continent. There are two types of doves on Maui, the Spotted Dove and the Zebra Dove.

enlarge 112KB, 720x423 109 Wailuku River After a rain in the mountains, this is a raging torrent of water.
enlarge 116KB, 640x626 110 Wailuku River Valley It's about half a mile up this river bed to get to the Needle. You don't want to walk up the river bed, however. A shower up in the mountains translates to a flash flood over these rocks.

enlarge 48KB, 720x295 112 Sugar Beach Sunrise Sugar Beach is on the northeast shore of Maalaea Bay. It can be accessed from a number of points long N. Kihei Road, or from the public park at Haycraft Park, at the end of Hauoli Street.
enlarge 43KB, 720x431 113 Haleakala Sunrise Haleakala is the name of the more recently active volcano on Maui. It's been an inactive volcano since, at least, the 17th Century, if not the 14th Century.

enlarge 35KB, 720x212 116 Sugar Beach Sunrise The mountain in the background is West Maui Mountain, the product of the older volcano on Maui.
enlarge 147KB, 640x425 117 Barefoot on the Beach There must have been someone on Sugar Beach before me this morning, as the only other footprints were these. By the way, there are many beaches on Maui where it is not good to go barefoot, due to the small lava rocks.

enlarge 38KB, 720x227 124 Maui Isthmus from Highway 37 If you do the Hana Highway drive backward (counter clockwise),this scene is about an hour out of Kahului, which you can see at the far right of photograph. If you decide to follow the guide books recommendation to not drive the second half the Highway to Hana, past Hana, I highly recommend that you drive the route counter-clockwise until you reach the bad roads on Piilani Highway on the south side of Maui. The views are spectacular.
enlarge 63KB, 640x412 125 Kanaio Nature Area On highway 31, also called Piilani highway, in south Maui. There is another 31/Piilani highway that runs along the west coast of South Moui.Though close together, you cannot get from one to the other 31/Piilani Highway directly. What appears to be a burned out area is a large lava field, the remnants of volcanic activity possibly as recent as the 18th Century, but more likely from the 15th Century.

Kaho'olawe, the large island in the center, background, was used a bombing practice site until about 1990. It is uninhabited.

enlarge 67KB, 720x428 131 Maui Sail Surfers I'm impressed by the sail surfers. They are talented athletes, as changing direction involves stepping around the sail, without being knocked off the board, as it swings 180 degrees.
enlarge 27KB, 720x240 132 Maui Plain between the Mountains This photograph was taken from about halfway up Haleakala Crater. The reason Maui is called the Valley Isle is because of this large plain between the northwest and southeast volcano ranges, along with the numerous valleys that have been cut through the mountains by erosion.

It's Hawaiian name is Pu'u Ola'l (Earthquake Hill), due to oral history of the ground shaking as the lava was forced to the surface. Today, locals call it "Red Hill".
