Italian Immigrant's letter 1953 Cara Lucia. My heart is sad I shall never see Mama again. After such a long sickness I am happy she is at peace. Now she has gone I think I will never see Italy again. I pray for her in heaven. You speak of many Italians leaving for America and Canada. Also many come to Australia. Some come to live near us. Australians call them 'dings' and 'dagoes'. The children at school are cruel sometimes. They tease the Italian children about salami sandwiches and other food we eat. It is not so bad here in the country. They are used to us here. The grandchildren are not interested in the old ways. Rosa says her name is Rose. I must finish now. I still have to bake for Easter. If I do not bake everyone complains. Da tuo zia (aunt) Maria | |
