Among those ranks, the Tudor is arguably the top dog in terms of the price point, and should you have a smaller budget, the new 40.5mm Seiko SPB Prospex models are all-stars for less than $1,500. That said, the Seiko is not competition for the Tudor, especially within the perspective of the wider consumer market.

It's the latest evolution of the brand's mastery of materials and speaks to a new kind of homage: One that's less about a direct connection to the past, and more about winking in the rear view mirror and creating a true modern watch with bona fide heritage.Sure, I'm biased to some extent, in that I'm lucky to call Montanari a friend, and the press release said this was the watch most heavily influenced by Montanari's input, but I think the excellence of the simplicity is undeniable in comparison. The watch has a wonderful two-tone "taupe" dial that shifts from a muted grey to a sandy dark brown, depending on the light. Two-tone dials work best when they are subtly contrasting at most, like silver and white on vintage Pateks.
