                                    CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS
UPDATED 6/26/2022
CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS - RAISING RAT TERRIERS IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FOR THE PAST 29 YEARS.
FAMILY HISTORY: Since the late 1920's my grandparents (and mother) raised Rat Terriers. Some of our adult children and Grandchildren are raising a few Rat Terriers. They all know the importance of this great little dog in our family's history.

RAT TERRIER HISTORY: Previously called "Toy Fox Terriers " and "Ratters" and "Feists." This American developed breed was the "farm dog" of the 40's and 50's and kept the rodents under control in the barn filled with grain and hay. RAT TERRIERS became the cherished family pet and playmate to the children.

ABOUT US: John and I (married 54 years) are retired and recently moved from our Mtn Home in Mariposa back to Ceres, Ca. where we raised our children. In our mid 70's we decided we needed to be closer to our children, so we could become a nuisance to them as we age further! Everybody needs an "exit plan!" We will miss the mountains and the wildlife (animals, I mean) but we are where we need to be.
Our dogs spend most of their day outside but sleep in kennels in our garage where we have fans in summer and heaters in winter. We always kennel our dogs when we both leave the house.
We believe that is our responsibility to our neighbors and to our dogs.
PUPPY SOCIALIZATION: Our new MOMS and puppies are always raised in our home, next to our recliners. Puppies learn to become more confident when exposed to a noisy busy home.

PROPER PUPPY PROTOCOL: PPP (as I call it) starts at 4-5 weeks when puppies are introduced to the outside adventures in X-pens. As they get used to that they are exposed to aunts, grandmothers and sometimes cranky elders, who teach them acceptable puppy behavior in the dog world. This is an important time in their development. Plus, it provides cheap entertainment for John and I as we watch from our large front window!

DOG SHOWING: 20 years of dog showing, first with UKC and now AKC, has taught us a lot!  Most importantly, making good breeding choices aiming for healthy, structurally correct Rat Terriers with great temperaments. By competing in conformation our dogs are evaluated and validated by professional judges. We feel if our dogs are not good enough to earn their Champion or Grand Champion titles they probably shouldn't be bred. I've slowed down showing when I turned 75. It's not pretty to trip over your dog in the show ring!
While most of our puppies are not going into "show homes" we believe you want the best quality Rat Terriers we can produce. And, you get more compliments when others recognize the beauty and quality of a show quality dog!

HEALTH TESTING: Our dogs are DNA tested for PLL, PRA-PRCD, DM and for the "coat length" gene. Only CLEAR dogs are bred. The parent's hearts & patellas are vet examined and deemed excellent. I am a retired Reg Nurse with an OB background. I was also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) With that professional background I am very focused on health, safety and good record keeping. I draw on my OB experience as I assist mothers giving birth. But I'm also very grateful for our local vets as they are invaluable to me when I need them. I give vaccinations and worming meds on schedule and do my own tail docking and dew claw removal. I also microchip all our puppies before they leave.

SPAY/NEUTER: Most of our show quality puppies go to "Pet homes" and are spayed/neutered which we encouraged. We also believe a dog should be over a year old before spaying/neutering to let them mature. Many dogs are spayed/neutered too young in the interest of preventing unwanted pregnancies. We have learned that early neutering is detrimental to their health and development.

AKC KENNEL INSPECTIONS in 2019 and 2021:
AKC Field Rep. Scott Jackson visited our home and inspected our kennels.  This was his final statement on the report: "The Breeder is in compliance with all the rules and regulations of the AKC and should be commended on the overall care and condition of her dogs and the organization of her records."

CAL VAL PUPPIES ARE ...
**Sold with a Health Warantee **Out of Grand Champion bloodlines **Out of only PLL, PRA-PRCD, DM and coat "length" gene CLEAR parents who are Vet examined for "excellent" hearts/patellas **Microchipped / Vaccinated / Dewormed on schedule **Litter box trained by 7 wks (started at 3.5 wks)**Raised in our living room with lots of love **Lifetime return policy if you are ever unable to care for your puppy/dog.

LEARNING ABOUT RAT TERRIERS: I (Gail) was on the Board of Directors for ARTA (American Rat Terrier Assoc) for several years. I chaired several projects and committees.  I personally designed the ARTA logo, which is still being used. I also created the ARTA Color Guide. I worked side by side with UKC (United Kennel Club) Vice Pres Cindy Cook. This was an invaluable time in my personal growth and learning about all things, RAT TERRIER.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Our Mariposa SPCA & Animal Control Dept know us well. All our dogs are registered with Mariposa Co. We have worked with the SPCA in rehoming several Rat Terriers over the years. We will be registering our dogs now at our new home in Ceres, Ca.

REFERRALS: We refer to other breeders who have the same health testing protocols we do. We are not in competition with anyone. Nor, do we argue with those who may feel differently than we do. We will not participate in slander.

PHOTOS / WEBSITE: I take all our photos. They are copyright protected with all rights reserved. Photographing puppies and keeping websites up to date is my passion. I try to put up NEW photos of our puppies every week to keep you happy! I like taking extra photos of any puppy you are interested in. I use it as an excuse to avoid housework! You may share any of our albums with others but do NOT post them on social media. Ask my permission if you wish to copy a photo for personal use. Please, do not cross post our photos or albums without our permission.

HAPPY RATTING!

We are fortunate to have several close breeder friends who share their quality males with us
for breeding.  None of us are in competition with each other.  We try to help each other
in our breeding choices ... always with an eye to creating better and better Rat Terriers.
Other Hobby Breeders will understand the wisdom in this. More then one intact male sets up
competitive stress for the dogs and that stresses out us humans!
GRCH REGIS sires litters for us as well as outside selected females.

ALL of our MALES and FEMALES are PLL & PRCD CLEAR!

SINCE THE EARLY 1900'S MY FAMILY HAS BEEN LOVING AND RAISING RAT TERRIERS. HERE YOU CAN SEE THE
PHOTOS OF MY GRANDPARENTS, MY MOTHER, MY UNCLE AND THE RAT TERRIERS THEY RAISED WHO WERE SO
MUCH A PART OF THE FAMILY.  THEY CALLED THEM "TOY FOX TERRIERS" BUT YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE
NOT THE SMALL TFT OF TODAY.  THEY WERE LATER CALLED RAT TERRIERS BY PRESEIDENT TEDDY
ROOSEVELT AND THAT BECAME THEIR OFFICIAL NAME SHORTLY THEREAFTER.

THEY ARE REMARKABLY SMART, LOYAL, FUN AND VERSATILE DOGS WHO WILL WAG THEIR WAY INTO YOUR HEART
AND BE YOUR BEST FRIEND FOR LIFE.

WE SHOW AND CHAMPION AND GRAND CHAMPION OUR DOGS TO VALIDATE THEIR QUALITY BUT MOST OF
OUR PUPS GO TO FAMILIES WHO JUST WANT A WONDERFUL PET, WHICH IS FINE WITH US.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A PUREBRED REGISTERED DOG, WHY NOT BUY QUALITY?

If you have any questions about our current Rat Terriers or just want to talk dogs... email me at GRINAVERE@AOL.COM

5. CALENDAR  BOYS AND GIRLS  (December 5, 2002)
ALBUM UPDATED 1/28/09

(2015) I'm only 6 yrs behind in adding to this web site. I'll get to it ... Really!  Our dogs
have been featured every year ... much to our gleeful surprise.

STARTING IN 2002 WITH THE FIRST NATIONAL RAT TERRIER CALENDAR (EVER!)
OUR TWO PUPPIES WERE FEATURED ON THE FRONT COVER.

EVERY YEAR SINCE THEN  OUR DOGS HAVE BEEN ON THE COVER OR THE INSIDE OF THE
BROWN TROUT CALENDARS AND ARE NOW BEING FEATURED ON OTHER NATIONAL CALENDARS.

THERE ARE NO WORDS TO EXPRESS THE THRILL OF HAVING OUR DOGS FEATURED IN THIS WAY!!

They pick the photos without any influence from us!  Really!

GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL GETS HER NAME
6. GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL GETS HER NAME  (August 21, 2003)
ALBUM UPDATED 1/28/09
Every once in a while you keep a puppy who has the appearance of a total sweetheart. Then, they turn into a rip-snortin' package of trouble, wrapped up in a cute package.

Such is the case with Miss CAL VAL GIRDY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL and this is how she got her name.

GIRDY IS AN ADULT NOW AND A DELIGHTFUL PET TO A WONDERFUL FAMILY. I'VE NEVER HAD A PUPPY QUITE LIKE HER.

UKC GR CH CHAOS
7. UKC GR CH CHAOS    (August 21, 2003)
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
CHOAS came to us a as a fat puppy from Patty Cromer of Maxwells Rats in Alabama many years ago and our life has never been the same.
This sweet suhthun boy won my heart and knocked our sox off in the show ring. CHAOS was the first dog that I truly considered my OWN and my HEART DOG. He taught me how to show dogs as he was a natural and I was a Newbie.
Not only did I acquire my canine heart throb, I also acquired a great friend in Patty.
CHAOS's parents are:
MAXWELL'S FULL OF TROUBLE
and MAXWELL'S MISSY
He is a UKC Grand Champion and one of his daughter's was the 2002 #1 TOP TEN Rat Terrier in the Nation in show points.
CHAOS has several Champion and Grand Champion offspring and grandoffspring now. Many have been in the Top Ten. He was the featured dog on the 2003 front cover of the Brown Trout Calendars for Rat Terriers and in the year 2004 he is the featured dog for the month of MAY.

SAD UPDATE:  CHAOS was injured in September of 2005 and barely survived.  He was left paralized. I spent the next 3 1/2 months trying to rehabilitate him enough that he could stand and walk again. That required expressing his bladder several times a day and sewing outfits for him to protect his legs from sores as he scooted across the house. We made some progress but he was never able to walk or stand. He was relatively happy but he really missed being outside and KING of the yard.

It was an emotional time for me and for my family.  The Grandchildren were especially affected by this as he was dearly loved by all of them.  On December 10, 2005, after much prayer and many family discussions, I let CHAOS go to his Heavenly Father. For months I could not talk about it or I would dissolve. I've never had the loss of a dog effect me so much. I missed my buddy and my friend. I appreciated all the kind words of condolences from those who loved my boy and who love me. It helped.
Most Sincerely, Gail
