Alaska - All Airlines Operating There The number of airlines operating in Southeast Alaska during its history from the 1920's is staggering. Most, if not all of the postcards available prior to 1940 were Real Photo types made by local photographers. Most of those are rare. Pan American Airways became interested in the mail routes in the 1930's and started Pacific Alaska Airways with an eye on the mail contracts. 1 Alaska Air Express Some how I don't think this passenger is excited about his flight. 2 Alaska Air Express They operated out of Juneau in 1933-34. I could not find much information on this airline. 3 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K This aircraft traveled through the Panama Canal by ship from the East coast to the West Coast before arriving in Alaska in 1937. 4 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K The plane was not registered properly and the airline had one problem after another. 5 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K Another view of the aircraft in Alaska. Alaska Airways was a very short lived airline in Alaska. 6 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K In September 1937 the license for the aircraft was revoked which marked the beginning of the end of Alaska Airways. 7 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N88820 At one time Alaska Coastal Airlines owned 10 Grumman Goose aircraft. They were a successful airline for many years in Alaska. 8 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N88820 Eventually they merged with Ellis Airlines in 1962 and together were bought out by Alaska Airlines in 1968. 9 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N48550 At their Juneau, Alaska base. This aircraft was acquired from the Royal Canadian Air Force and was put into service in 1945. 10 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N48550 The Kodak stamp box indicates the card was made in the early 1950's. 11 Alaska-Washington Airways Lockheed Vega "Taku" of Alaska-Washington Airways. NC 102 W. They operated from 1929 to 1932. 12 Alaska-Washington Airways This is one of two different Real Photo postcards I've seen of this plane by photographer Ordway. 13 Alaskan Airways Hamilton Metalplane N.C.10002 Alaskan Airways was acquired by Pan American Airways in 1932 and became Pacific Alaska Airways. 14 Alaskan Airways Hamilton Metalplane N.C.10002 Pan Am was interested in securing mail routes in Alaska. 15 Ketchikan Airways The Stinson SM-8A "Northbird" of Ketichan Airways. NC-991-W. 16 Ketchikan Airways This airline operated from 1931 to 1933. May 8, 1938. 33 Pacific Alaska Airways As uninteresting as this view is the plane on the right is the Pacific Alaska Airways Lockheed Electra NC 14259. 34 Pacific Alaska Airways The great thing about Real Photo postcards is the details one can see with a magnifying glass. This view is at the airport in Cordova, Alaska. 35 Pacific Alaska Airways Two Lockheed Electras One of several Real Photo postcards of Mary Hansen and dog sled teams by the Pacific Alaska Electras. I believe she is the person sitting in the sled. 36 Pacific Alaska Airways Two Lockheed Electras I assume the reason for these postcards is to show the contrast between the old and new modes of transportation in Alaska. 37 Pacific Alaska Airways Two Lockheed Electras Another postcard showing Mary Hansen and a couple dog sled teams. It is beyond my comprehension why anyone would by a reproduction of anything except maybe the Mona Lisa. 41 Pacific Alaska Airways A Fairchild 71 aircraft, NC 9709, of Pacific Alaska Airways in Fairbanks, Alaska. 42 Pacific Alaska Airways An EKC stamp box on back indicating a time of 1939 or after. 43 Pan American Airways Sikorsky S-43 Pan Am started survey flights in Alaska with their Baby Clipper NC-16927 shown here in Ketchikan, Alaska on August 7, 1938. 44 Pan American Airways Sikorsky S-43 They continued survey flights until in 1940 they started regular passenger service with the Sikorsky S-42B Alaskan Clipper in 1940. 45 White Pass Airways The Ford Tri-Motor aircraft, NC5092, flew for White Pass Airways in the 1930's. 46 White Pass Airways It flew a scheduled service between Skagway, Whitehorse, Mayo and Dawson City. 47 White Pass Airways Another Real Photo postcard of their Ford Tri-Motor aircraft. 48 White Pass Airways This card was made by local photographer Dedman. 49 Pilots of the Pan Handle by Jim Ruotsala If you collect airline postcards from Alaska you will enjoy the two books by Jim Ruotsala.
