Alaska - All Airlines Operating There The number of airlines operating in Southeast Alaska during its history from the 1920's is staggering. Most, if not all of the postcards available prior to 1940 were Real Photo types made by local photographers. Most of those are rare and are the only postcards available from the time of the airlines operation. Pan American Airways became interested in the mail routes in the 1930's and started Pacific Alaska Airways with an eye on the mail contracts. In 1940 Pan Am itself started regular service into Alaska. I have listed all of the airlines in alphabetical order in this album. Album by Barry Hepsley. 1 - 129 of 129 Total. 3174 Visits.
1 2 Alaska Air Express Some how I don't think this passenger is excited about his flight. 3 Alaska Air Express They operated out of Juneau in 1933-34. I could not find much information on this airline. 4 5 Alaska Airlines Golden Nugget Service in the interior of this Douglas DC-6C aircraft of Alaska Airlines. 6 Alaska Airlines An airline issued Chrome postcard. Kodak stamp box. 16 17 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K This aircraft traveled through the Panama Canal by ship from the East coast to the West Coast before arriving in Alaska in 1937. 18 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K The plane was not registered properly and the airline had one problem after another. 19 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K Another view of the aircraft in Alaska. Alaska Airways was a very short lived airline in Alaska. 20 Alaska Airways Savoia-Marchetti NC 20K In September 1937 the license for the aircraft was revoked which marked the beginning of the end of Alaska Airways. 21 22 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N88820 At one time Alaska Coastal Airlines owned 10 Grumman Goose aircraft. They were a successful airline for many years in Alaska. 23 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N88820 Eventually they merged with Ellis Airlines in 1962 and together were bought out by Alaska Airlines in 1968. 24 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N48550 At their Juneau, Alaska base. This aircraft was acquired from the Royal Canadian Air Force and was put into service in 1945. 25 Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose N48550 The Kodak stamp box indicates the card was made in the early 1950's. 26 Alaska Coastal Airlines Lockheed Vega A water front postcard for two ships, but on the lower left is a Lockheed Vega of Alaska Coastal Airlines. Small 2-3/4" x 3-1/2" plain back souvenir photo. 115 Noel Wien had a long history of flying in Alaska starting in 1924. There are many name and company changes along the way. This name Wien Alaska Airlines started in 1935. My earliest card is the next one from 1959. 116 Wein Alaska Airlines Nome Office. The company office of Wein Alaska Airlines is on the left. I'm sure they ate lunch at the Glue Spot restaurant next door! 117 Wein Alaska Airlines A Real Photo postcard made by an unknown local photographer. The card was mailed from Kotzebue, Alaska on Jul. 15, 1959. 118 Wein Consolidated Airlines Card WCA-4 Blanket Tossing .... The number one sport of Alaskan Eskimos. The blanket is made from Walrus skins. The jumper may reach a height of 25 feet or more. 119 Wein Consolidated Airlines Card WCA-4 Chrome postcard with "W" logo. Dated 1967 on the back. This and the following cards are outside my normal collection range but they are interesting and well done postcards. 120 Wein Consolidated Airlines Card WCA-6 Boeing 737 twin-jets are used on the Main Line routes. 121 Wein Consolidated Airlines Card WCA-6 A Chrome postcard with the common "W" logo. First flight for the airline using the 737 was in 1968. 122 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-9 Looking down on Lethe River Canyon known as the "River of Death" in the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, Kati National Monument. One of the greatest volcanic explosions took place here in 1912. 123 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-9 Chrome postcard with the "W" logo. Printed by H. S. Crocker Co. of San Bruno, California. 124 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-10 Midnight Sun in Arctic Alaska. This is a time lapse photo taken from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. 125 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-10 A Chrome postcard with the "W" logo. This one is dated 1971 on the back. 126 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-11 Boeing 737 jets transport passengers and cargo throughout most of Alaska and into the Yukon Territory. The airline traces its history to Noel Wien's first flight between Anchorage and Fairbanks in July 1924. 127 Wein Air Alaska Card WCA-11 A Chrome postcard with the "W" logo.
