Certainly the most innovative of the local service airlines, Allegheny started as All American Aviation, delivering mail and occasional passengers in 1939. By 1949 All American was a passenger carrier and in 1953 changed its name to Allegheny. Allegheny was first to operate a re engined Convair, (the 540). It forever changed the industry with the creation of the Allegheny Commuter network, and with the inclusion of Lake Central and Mohawk became a major carrier, renaming to US Air in 1979. The last of the Local Service airlines to go, Allegheny (US AIR) was merged into American in 2015. | |
