A look at Ethiopian Airlines 1/ 2023
Formed by Proclamation of Emperor Haile Sellassie in 1946, Ethiopian Airlines has been the most successful of the National Airlines from the African Continent. Launched with a fleet of 5 DC-3s, and navigating through some turbulant times, Ethiopian has remained the leader in service and technology to the present.
Following are postcards that illustrate the years of growth and innovation

Ethiopian DC-3
Ethiopian operated an amazing fleet of 40 DC-3s. This beauty, one of the last acquired, came from Union of Burma Airways in 1976 , and was destroyed on the ground in 1988 during some of Ethiopia's most turbulent times. Card is from a historical set produced by Udo Schaeffer.

Ethiopian Convair 240 #3 KCF
In 1950, the airline acquired two new Convair 240 aircraft. This early Ethiopian issue, shared by Kuo-Ching Fu, shows their new aircraft ET-T-20 at Nairobi

Ethiopian Convair 240 #2
This splendid Ethiopian issue shows the Convair in flight. It operated for 14 years before sale to Central Airlines in the USA. It ultimately was sold to Bar Harbor for parts in 1981

Ethiopian DC-6B #1
By 1958, Ethiopian Acquired the new DC-6B its growing international services. Illustrated on this outstanding Ethiopian issue is ET-T25, the first of three new DC-6Bs delivered.

Ethiopian issued this splendid in flight view of their first DC-6B. In 1977 it was sold to Alyemda.

Ethiopian 720B #3
In November of 1962 Ethiopian took delivery of their first Boeing 720B aircraft. This possibly pre-delivery card uses the very nice format previously seen on a DC-6B issue.

This excellent Ethiopian issue features ET-AAH, their 2nd 720B at Addis Ababa Airport. In 1966, it was sold to Middle East.

Ethiopian 727-200 #2
The first of only three 727-260 Advanced models delivered to Ethiopian, ET-AHL was received in 1979, serving until 1992. Card is an Ethiopian Issue

An outstanding view of AHL on this Ethiopian Issue. It later operated for SAM of Columbia among other airlines, and finished its service with Allegro in Mexico in 2000

The new 767-200ER joined the Ethiopian Fleet in May of 1984. This Ethiopian issue features that first aircraft in flight

An absolutely stunning view of ET-AIE in flight on a Polish Lemitours issue. After 20 years service with Ethiopian it served an additional three with Kras Air.

Ethiopian DHC-6
The Twin Otter found a home at Ethiopian serving smaller destinations and more primitive airports. ET AIM shown on this Buchair issue was delivered in in February of 1985, and served until 2008.  later flew 8 years for Air Moorea.

Ethiopian 737-200
Ethiopian added 2 new 737-260 airliners to the fleet in 1987. ET-AJA, shown on this APC issue was lost a year later at Bahar Dar, Ethiopia. The other new 737 flew for 20 years

Ethiopian Hercules
Ethiopian operated 3 all cargo L-100-30 aircraft, the first of which was delivered in 1988. This one, ET-AKG, was delivered in 1992, operating until 2013. Card is a Buchair      issue.

Ethiopian ATR-42
The year 1988 also saw the introduction of the ATR 42 to Ethiopian's domestic route system. This beautiful Avimage issue features ET AJC, their first ATR still wearing its delivery registration. It operated through 1998, and is stored at Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian 757-200
In 1990, the first of 5 new 757-260 aircraft was delivered to Ethiopian.This oversized Ethiopian issue, features the new 757, as well as some Ethiopian scenes. The five served for more than 20 years, and were joined by a number of used aircraft acquired in the early 2000s

Ethiopian 757-200 PF MDS
Some 757s were also employed as freighters.  This beauty, ET AJS was acquired new, as a PF model. It was delivered in June of 1990, and served until; June of 2018.

Ethiopian F-50 #1 KCF
In 1996, the first of six Fokker 50 aircraft was added to Ethiopian's regional fleet. ET-AKR, shown on this unidentified publisher card was delivered  on Oct 1, of that year. The fleet served for nearly 15 years, and most were sold to Pacific Royale.

Ethiopian 737-700
In 2004, Ethiopian took delivery of two new winglet equipped 737-700s. (ET-ALQ, ET-ALU) They operated for 10 years before delivery to Scandinavian.  Additional 700 models were later leased for shorter terms.

Ethiopian 767-300 #1
In November of 2003 the beautiful 767-360ER joined Ethiopian's international fleet.ET-ALJ operated for 17 years, and was chartered by the United Nations

In July of 2010, Ethiopian began taking delivery of the DHC-8-400 aircraft, which is featured on this 70th anniversary issue.

Ethiopian 777-200 #1
In November 2010, Ethiopian took delivery of their 1st 777-260, providing Non stop Addis Ababa to Washington DC flights, as well as other long hauls. The 777s are also being used extensively for Cargo flights
The card is a 70th Anniversary Ethiopian Issue

Ethiopian 787 #1
Ethiopian's fleet of 787s began arriving in August of 2012, and the Dreamliner is a major part of the International fleet, totalling 18 aircraft.  Card is a Frankfurt office issue.
