Coming off a long Covid year of 2020, we were hoping that 2021 would be more of a return to pre-pandemic times. Unfortunately this was not to be. At a routine eye exam, the Dr. found that there was something wrong with Sue’s field of vision. In early June, she had an MRI scan of her brain (also having an extreme allergic reaction to the dye used) that found that she had a significant brain tumor (about the size of a lemon) and would be scheduled to have surgery to have it removed on July 5.
Photos in this album include a series with her granddaughters so that they would have some memory of her if the surgery did not work out. The surgery was successful and the tumor was not malignant (although it was growing – a Type 2 Meningioma). After a short stay at Virginia Mason Seattle, Sue went to a Rehab clinic near us but her condition deteriorated due to an UTI and a pulmonary embolism that forced a transfer to Swedish Hospital in Edmonds, where it was touch and go for a while. After a longer stay there, she went back to the Rehab clinic and remained there until two days before Christmas, nearly six months spent in institutional care.
So it was a memorable summer for all the wrong reasons.

I have two vine maples on either side of my driveway. The one on the left always gets its leaves before the one on the right. It also turns color first in the fall.
