February 2019 brought many surprises, a huge snowfall, trees and tree sized limbs falling on and around the house, and last but not least, the birth of our two new granddaughters, Iris and Ione. Although their birth was several weeks sooner than the ideal (37 weeks), both babies were healthy and were fortunate to be in the care of the Evergreen Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Initially there were triplets (Baby A, B, & C), which made the pregnancy a high risk one. Unfortunately two of the babies were identical twins and developed Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), which put both at risk. An operation was done to try to save both Babies A and B, but Baby B was not strong enough to survive the operation. A good article on this syndrome can be found HERE. In that article there is also a video of Kelsey's doctor, Dr. Bettina Paek, explaining TTTS and the laser treatment.
