enlarge 93KB, 800x600 1 ut07-d1-001r Well, the old "Silver Bullet" (1985 Camry) aka "Gray Ghost" made it. We had planned a trip back to the Escalante, but a late April snowfall made the roads impassable so we opted to spend a night in Hanksville and drive on to Cedar Mesa the next morning in hopes of landing a permit. Fortunately we were able to get a permit for the Owl and Fish Canyon loop and made it to the trailhead (the road was not bad) not too late in the morning.
enlarge 98KB, 800x600 2 ut07-d1-002r Eric had a bad foot and was unable to make the trip through the canyon, so he was going to camp out on the mesa top and spend his time reading and getting in touch with his inner self.
enlarge 98KB, 800x600 3 ut07-d1-003j Here we are getting ready to head out.

enlarge 90KB, 800x598 9 ut07-d1-009a Just about ready.
enlarge 80KB, 800x600 10 ut07-d1-010b Saying goodbye to Eric.
enlarge 81KB, 800x600 11 ut07-d1-011b Roger and Danny heading out over the mesa top.
enlarge 94KB, 800x600 12 ut07-d1-012b Roger and Danny - you can see that it was a very cold morning.
enlarge 79KB, 800x600 13 ut07-d1-013j On our way.
enlarge 55KB, 800x600 14 ut07-d1-014b Allison
enlarge 90KB, 800x600 15 ut07-d1-015j The way heads over a slickrock drainage to the canyon edge. Note water pools left over from previous day's snowstorm.
enlarge 100KB, 800x600 16 ut07-d1-016j Normally these pools would be all dried up.
enlarge 148KB, 800x600 17 ut07-d1-017j Here we are at the rim - its a scramble to get down.
enlarge 121KB, 800x598 18 ut07-d1-018a Danny, Roger, and Joel at the rim.
enlarge 145KB, 800x600 19 ut07-d1-019j Joel - it's a long way down to the canyon bottom.
enlarge 150KB, 800x600 56 ut07-d1-056j Another cairn marks the way.
enlarge 171KB, 800x600 57 ut07-d1-057j A rough spot for Bill. I had a nasty fall in this section and skinned my knee up pretty bad.
enlarge 163KB, 800x600 58 ut07-d1-058j Danny and some large boulders.
enlarge 135KB, 600x800 59 ut07-d1-059j Roger scrambling down.
enlarge 130KB, 800x600 60 ut07-d1-060j Roger - About halfway down you come to a big ledge with expansive views down the canyon.
enlarge 142KB, 800x600 61 ut07-d1-061j View from the ledge.
enlarge 165KB, 800x598 62 ut07-d1-062a Looking down the canyon from the ledge.
enlarge 126KB, 600x800 63 ut07-d1-063b Looking back up to the ledge - the long lateral line midway up the cliff beyond. You can see that we have come a long way down already.
enlarge 170KB, 800x600 64 ut07-d1-064j Some flowers.
enlarge 126KB, 800x600 65 ut07-d1-065j Close up.
enlarge 123KB, 800x600 66 ut07-d1-066j Patterns in the rock.
enlarge 111KB, 800x600 67 ut07-d1-067j Extreme closeup of fire red Indian Paintbrush - they grow here in the canyons as well as in alpine conditions.
enlarge 165KB, 800x600 68 ut07-d1-068j Its a hard go through this section of the canyon - note Danny at the left on a trail skirting the bouldery jungle at the canyon bottom.
enlarge 123KB, 800x600 69 ut07-d1-069j A desert pool.
enlarge 75KB, 800x600 70 ut07-d1-070j Scrambling between some huge boulders.
enlarge 172KB, 800x600 73 ut07-d1-073j Another pool - this is a very scenic stretch of the upper canyon.
enlarge 167KB, 600x800 74 ut07-d1-074j Still a scramble to get down.
enlarge 160KB, 800x600 75 ut07-d1-075j Danny taking a break in this grove of trees.
enlarge 153KB, 800x600 76 ut07-d1-076j Danny - usually takes 4 or 5 books along for the trip - Hardcover editions!
enlarge 237KB, 800x600 77 ut07-d1-077j Going through a section of horsetail ferns.
enlarge 192KB, 800x600 78 ut07-d1-078r It's late April - so the leaves are fully out.
enlarge 140KB, 800x600 79 ut07-d1-079j Don't tread on me - prickly pear cactus??
enlarge 102KB, 800x600 80 ut07-d1-080j An interesting algae bloom caught Joel's artistic eye - wouldn't want to depend on this for drinking water!
enlarge 227KB, 800x600 81 ut07-d1-081j Cactus and flower blooms.
enlarge 88KB, 800x600 82 ut07-d1-082j Closeup of blooms - Utah Sweet Pea ? or some form of Lupine?
enlarge 157KB, 800x600 83 ut07-d1-083j Near the end of the first stretch .
enlarge 148KB, 600x800 84 ut07-d1-084b Another view.
enlarge 168KB, 600x800 85 ut07-d1-086b Allison.
enlarge 128KB, 600x800 86 ut07-d1-087b More slickrock - this is easier going.
enlarge 127KB, 600x800 87 ut07-d1-088b Coming to a junction.
enlarge 120KB, 800x600 88 ut07-d1-089j Roger and Danny - it looks like we are entering a main canyon, but the main canyon goes to the left and the one to the left is just a side canyon. There is a big pouroff here, which requires a long switchback into the left side canyon.
enlarge 133KB, 600x800 89 ut07-d1-090b Swinging to the left into the side canyon, I met this couple on their way out. By chance they were also from the Seattle area.
enlarge 113KB, 600x800 90 ut07-d1-091b The couple took this picture of me looking down canyon.
enlarge 96KB, 600x800 91 ut07-d1-092b At the bottom of the huge pouroff we had avoided is this bueatiful pool. Although we hadn't gone that far, we decided to camp here.
enlarge 109KB, 800x600 92 ut07-d1-093b Another view - there was a small trickle of water cascading down the rock face.
enlarge 126KB, 600x800 93 ut07-d1-094j This is a beautiful spot - When we were here in 2001 there was much more of a waterfall coming over the pouroff.
enlarge 123KB, 800x598 94 ut07-d1-095a Closeup of pool.
enlarge 150KB, 800x598 95 ut07-d1-096a Danny taking a break.
enlarge 174KB, 800x598 96 ut07-d1-097a Roger goofing off. We had a nice camp in the cottonwoods here.

enlarge 155KB, 800x600 99 ut07-d1-100j A friendly game of bridge.
enlarge 184KB, 800x598 100 ut07-d1-101a Even Joel took time to relax.
enlarge 195KB, 800x600 101 ut07-d1-102j Even I dozed off.
enlarge 173KB, 800x600 102 ut07-d1-104b Our camp.
enlarge 135KB, 600x800 103 ut07-d1-105b View of the cliffs above our camp.
enlarge 195KB, 800x600 104 ut07-d1-106b A wonderful afternoon lazing away - pretty far removed from the previous day's snowstorm.
