Chelan Summit
AKA "The George Hike"
July, 1997

This was a 7 day backpacking trip along the Chelan Summit. We call it the "George" Hike, because at the pack check the night before we left, Bill Peckinpaugh's childhood friend, Jorge (George) Gonzalles was looking wistfully as we were getting ready. I asked him if he wanted to go, and he agreed to come.

Unfortunately, I didn't get photos for the middle of the trip, and so I missed a lot of scenery. At the Junction Camp (below Boiling Lake), I missed Shelby's Bug, where on a bet he ate a "cricket" like bug about 2 inches long, not just swallowing it, but crunching it with his teeth. When asked why he did that, he said that "If I'm going to eat it, I might as well see what it tastes like!

Another memorable moment (well that may be stretching it, maybe unforgettable is more appropriate) is when we got a double full moon, as the moon was rising above our camp at Surprise Lake, George decided to bend over when he was taking a bath in the creek.

Kickass Trek - August 1997

This was a very long and strenuous trip through rugged country with a lot of cross country scrambling. The difficulty was offset by the scenery as you can see from the photos in this album.

Lost Creek Ridge
September 1997

No school on Friday meant we could do a multi-day trip in September, and the Lost creek Ridge trail is a good one. The weather cooperated and we had a great trip. It's a rugged trip, 20.5 miles and 7600 ft. climbed, but it is also one of the most scenic hikes in the Cascades. Topped off with a dip in Kennedy Hot Springs, it was a good way to close out the alpine hiking for the year.

This hike is no longer possible as we did it in 1997. In October 2003 the deteriorating Whitechuck Trail was completely destroyed by floods and mudslides taking out many trail bridges, and obliterating the hot springs and nearby ranger cabin.

Lake Fontal Bike Campout
November 1997

In November, we did a Bike hike (Rob Mulkey & I backpacked) to Lake Fontal. True to form, Greg Phillips had us stop at the Dairy Queen in Woodinville before the hike for breakfast. It was a good outing and a little different than our usual ones.

Deception Pass State Park
& Oak Harbor Naval Air Station
December 1997

Our December outing was a car camp out at Deception Pass & a visit to the Oak Harbor Naval Air Station. We made our usual stop at the Burlington McDonalds for breakfast and then on to the the Naval Air Station. Big laughs at the campfire when Karl attempted to tell the joke about the 12 inch pianist, by giving the punchline at the beginning of the joke.
