T91 Carolina Bright set (September 13, 2011)The T91 cards were given out at the 1907 Jamestown Exposition which commemorated the 300th anniversary of the historic settlement. The cards were printed by the American Lithograph Company with popular Nursery Rhymes on the front and ads for two popular brands of cigarettes, Carolina Brights and Wilson Straight Cut on the back. Both brands were produced in Wilson, NC by Wells-Whitehead Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of the ATC. The set includes 12 different fronts and should be available with both brands of backs, but to date I have only seen two Wilson Straight Cuts, and both had the same front, Tom, Tom, The Piper's Son. According to "American Tobacco Cards" by Forbes and Mitchell, the cards were distributed in a number of ways. First as giveaways at the Exposition, then as full sets to anyone who sent in five two cents stamps, and finally the left over cards were packed 25 per case of 500 cigarettes to liquidate the remaining stock. Despite the popularity of the brands in the region, especially Carolina Brights, the cards are very difficult to obtain. I am missing "Jack and Jill" and See Saw Margery Daw for completion. |
