I've created this album to help us as we proceed with the next round of the Five and Dime Style Challenge. Here are a mix of both vintage and B'sue Boutiques design brooches/brooches and earring sets that might qualify for Five and Dime-type style, and that might get your creativity primed! 1 Maybe we'll start this album with the cover page from the LAST wholesale catalogue I ever produced, back in 1997, for my line. We still sell a lot of these components and you might get a bunch of ideas from looking. Click on the photo and it will enlarge nicely! "I go back to these covers ..." View Comments...
2 This page from that catalogue highlights what was stock number PN38. As you can see, the basic shape and style is all the same. Each was done, however, in theme, and you could chose 12 different themes and get the 13Th FREE. They were larger than the photo conveys; about 2 1/2 inches up and down. We wholesaled these little compositions for 8.00 each. Ohmigoodness! ALSO: for the most part I used very little plated product on this line. All of the pieces were buffed out by hand with tripoli on a great big buffer, then engraved, then blackened with acrylic paint, and then sealed with Treasure Crystal Cote....which I no longer carry as I feel the toxicity level of the product is one of the worst in the business. Fine when it cured....but not when you applied it. Its first ingredient was Benzene. I may have learned about that the hard way. Today I would use Diamond Glaze or better yet, ICE resin....both non toxic.
3 This is actually the back page but you'll see a collaged cameo, also use of the tussie mussie rolled filigree cone we still carry in Russian Goldplate, made into a flower brooch. Also some examples of collaged barrettes. Curious, too, you can make cool brooches from the med-sized lace-edged heart by adding dangles. This would also make a nice necklace centerpiece.
4 This was a page of some of our animal brooches....cats were king, we sold MANY cat brooches of all types. My fave is the goofy cat with the chatelaine chain and heart; it was a two piece with tac backs and the hearts were engraved. I also loved the scotty dog pins. Those findings were made by a company that's gone out of business. Sigh.
5 As you can see, we have a lot of Teacher-themed jewelry here....great sellers! The spoons brooch was for a nurse and the little heart was engraved, Spoonful of sugar. I put lacquer in the bowls of the spoons and drifted glitter into them. Today we'd use Diamond Glaze. Don't forget to check out my Mona pieces. I still have a pair of these earrings.
6 This is a Vintage Hobe brooch that is built on a stamping that is still made and we sometimes carry. I will get some in and perhaps do a few myself. Not difficult, this is beginning cagework, and alot of fun....for the challenge, all you'd need is earrings.
7 This is a set I made about ten years ago from stampings, a repurposed locket (which you really can't see as it's encrusted with collage) vintage beads and jewels. There is a piece of old Italian mosaic in it as well. A nice marriage of just a teensy bit of repurposed pieces, the total effect may be a little fussy, but the earrings would be mod-chick style from the sixties and go okay w Five and Dime. If I were making them NOW, I would pair them w a different brooch. The type of brooch w the dangling locket is definitely Five and Dime Style; dangling locket brooches were a big hit for companies like Coro in the 40's and 50's.
8 I did use an old earring for the bottom of the basket. This was built on a fan-shaped base, which we still carry at B'sue Boutiques. The rest are tiny beads on headpins and flower power findings, some old, some new.
9 This is actually a wristy that Wendy Gell shared with us for our first round challenge. Even though I did mention that I would rather not see alot of repurposed material in the brooches and earrings round, I do think that the addition of something very unexpected, as you see here, might be fun. As you can see, Wendy used a vintage figurine. Could you wire or glue into your brooch composition a tiny vintage doll head, toy or figurine, and accent it with filigree, leaf stampings, rhinestone chain or stones? I would love to see some work made like that.
10 This is a piece from our B'sue Boutiques line back about 15-16 years ago. I've used a Cinderella shoe, some little stone sparklers, charm dangles and a tiny bisque rose.
11 This piece was a good seller in the Burpee Seed Catalog, back mid 90's. It was a composition entitled Thyme in a Garden, and many of the brooches were engraved w those words on the heart. This one is not.
12 Actually this is a necklace centerpiece....but I'm thinking, dress it down just a tiny bit and make a pair of earrings....it would make a great brooch set. 13 Kate Mulligan made this parure for the first challenge....she's got a brooch and ears here already. What would I do differently? Not a whole lot.....maybe add a few more drops to the brooch and shorten the ears for a simple Five and Dime Style. A great idea to expand on! She's used our Old Rose Ox filigree in the composition.
14 Fresh water pearl sticks, ab Czech glass leaves, stampings and fan stones, I made this for a special client about 12 years ago. Everything is wired in except the fan stones. It would be cool to see some simple caged pieces. Although this may look fussy, it really went together easily. I'll do a video soon on basic cagework as it's a good time to explore those techniques.
15 This is vintage Juliana, a set I had a long time ago and no longer do....waaah. In today's money it would be worth about ten times what I sold it for. The "easter egg" stones were enamelled glass and something for which I'm sure we could devise a technique.

17 Here you could combine elements of Five and Dime with Altered/Found item art. We still carry the lens, prong mount and pie crust bezel. I did a tiny collage of sewing materials under the art bubble (lens). Just need a pair of earrings!
18 Harry Wood made this necklace for the first round. NOW THEN....what if you used that centerpiece, built it out a little (backing, maybe some pearl accents) and added earrings? "I can see buying this at W..." View Comments...
19 Randi Samuels pushed the ticket for herself design-wise as she works in a completely different style. Her composition for the first round is perfect. For round two, this style would be great but I would personally add a touch of color to the pinwheel flowers, and of course, you'd need earrings.
20 Margo made this lovely fairy child brooch for Round One. I have always loved using this mount, http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/40x30mm-Pendant-Top-Mount-Brass-Ox-1314 at the B'sue Boutiques website, in this way---upside down. Through the piercings in the top, she could also add an on-off chain. All that is needed for Round two is a pair of eardrops, to give you an idea. Cameo jewelry was extremely popular in the 50's and 60's.

23 Lori Wilczek made this fabulous, inventive locket design using alot of our products and even more of her imagination. Although this was on a necklace chain, it could easily be translated into a brooch.....along with accompanying eardrops.
24 Here's a piece I made long ago from manipulated stampings, vintage stones, beads on headpins and a little tiny bit of repurposed material. Just would need earrings!
