An informal test to compare performance at wide angle between the 300D kit lens and the Sigma 18-200mm lens. A series of hand held frames were taken with each lens, focused and metered in the same spot and framed from a reference point in the top right of the scene. 400ISO was necesary for sufficient shutter speed.
1:1 pixel crops** were taken from the centre, top and bottom right hand corners and from the middle of the left hand edge, purely because there was no detail in the scene in the left corners.
My conclusion, from this rather cursory test, is that the Kit lens is a little better in the centre wide open at f3.5, but the Sigma improves more by stopping down to f8 and is better than the kit lens at that aperture. Performance of both lenses deteriorated from f11 again.
** These are actually screen grabs from the C1 focus screen for ease of framing (without any sharpening), the actual developed images were slightly sharper and more details than these - but for comparison purposes this sufficed.
