Galapagos/Ecuador 1/09 The two of us went for a 2-week trip to Ecuador. Four days were based in Quito, the capital city and eight nights were spent on a 16-passenger boat in the Galapagos Islands. We visited the islands of Baltra, Santa Cruz, Floreana, Espanola, Santa Fe, South Plaza, North Seymour, Sombrero Chino, Bartolome, Santiago, and Rabida. Date(s): Jan. 20 - 31, 2009. 1 On the Galapagos Island of Santa Cruz.  The group of islands is 570 miles from the mainland of Ecuador. 2 We arrived a day ahead of our trip to the Galapagos and arranged for a tour of Quito, the capital city. 3 Our first stop was the Basilica del Voto Nacional. 4 The design is based on the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris,... 5 except the gargoyles are animals native to Ecuador, like monkeys, condors and iguanas. 6 7 The Pope visited in 1985. 8 These blood stains reportedly appeared after the Pope's visit. 9 Construction of the Basilica started in 1897, 10 but the building is not yet complete. 11 Tourists are allowed to climb the towers to get a nice view of Old Town and beyond. 12 View of El Panacillo, a volcanic hill that is topped with a large statue of the Virgin Mary. 13 14 15 16 The Basilica from an overlook along a highway leading out of town. This photo was taken later in the trip. 17 Looking down upon a HUGE public school (30,000 students).  Both sport fields that are visible are part of this school. 18 Plaza del Teatro - The theater is the building on the right.
