Before: We find it hard to imagine the thinking of the designer for the kitchen. The walls were yellow with natural brown wood window trim, shiny cabinetry -- part black and part orang-ish-red with fake wood grain, gray and black granite countertops, terra cotta tile floors with gray grout, stainless steel appliances, and shiny multi-colored mozaic tile backsplash. We kindly described it as "funky."

The dishwasher was missing a kickplate and wasn't mounted to the cabinetry or countertop. The trash compacter was a filthy mess. The prep sink garbage disposal leaked. Refrigerator tilted, didn't fit in the built-in cubby so unfinished sides showed, plus it kept cycling on and off. Wash sink faucet leaked and the garbage disposal wasn't working. Pot faucet at the stove leaked. And there was no light over the peninsula, so at night you could barely see what you were working on.

But we decided to fix and improve what we could without totally ripping everything out. So we set to work...

First off we replaced the nasty trash compactor with a wine cooler. Mounted the dishwasher and added a kickplate. Fixed the leaky faucets. Replaced one garbage disposal and fixed the other. Caulked the bad countertop joints. Leveled the fridge, repaired the circuitry problem, and contact papered the exposed unfinished side. Added three electric outlets. Remounted the door to the trash/recycling cabinet so that it pulls out instead of swinging open.

The hinges on the cabinet above the peninsula only allowed the doors to open 90 degrees, making it extremely difficult to access that cabinet from either side.

So we replaced the hinges with ones that allow the doors to open almost 180 degrees. Much more functional!

Had 4 dimmable LED can lights installed, which can really light up the room. Also added a sun tube and removed the light fixture that had dangled in the middle of the room.

Installed fun colorful ceramic knobs on the cabinets, not just for functionality but also to tie the black cabinets and red ones together for a more cohesive look.

Removed the inefficient and stupidly-placed ceiling fixture and installed can lights plus added a sun tube.
