Meet SweetPea, whose personality fits her name perfectly.

SweetPea is one year old, standing 15.5" tall but weighing just 16.5 lbs.

She'd been picked up by animal control with horrible injuries--presumably from being hit by a car. She had multiple fractures plus open wounds on her torso, head, and legs. She was non-weight bearing on 2 legs, in great pain, and was considered unadoptable so was going to be euthanized.

Ratbone Rescues stepped in, however. Surprisingly, Xrays showed no surgically correctable breaks or dislocations. So she was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and lots of rest and TLC.

After 3 months, SweetPea is still fragile, but she is totally mobile and even will trot and run for short distances. She handles stairs and can get on the couch by herself. She gets a small daily dose of pain medicine and doesn't seem to be in discomfort. One hip has slipped from its socket, however, and she is to be seen by an orthopedic specialist on 11/1.

She is alert and inquisitive. She is normally very quiet, unless she is left alone, crated. Then her separation anxiety comes out and she will howl in despair. She doesn't mind being crated if her people are near, though.

She gets along great with other dogs, both large and small. And she LOVES to play with them, especially if they'll do doggie wrestling, complete with good-natured head biting.

And she does love a good chew toy! As with many pups, it's best not to leave her alone without her toys or chewies around, because she might decide the corner of the coffee table looks tasty.

She would rather, however, be in your lap snuggling.

She does well with all people she has met -- male and female, young and old. And she will give occasional gentle soft kisses, just to let you know that she appreciates being alive and loved.
