Carter is quite the Southern gentleman, with wonderful house manners.
He is about 7-8 years old, 16 lbs., and 13" tall.
Carter is very people-oriented. He likes everyone he meets, both adults and kids (especially kids!), and gets along great with female dogs. He completely ignores cats.
He was saved from euthanasia at the shelter at the very last minute.
His former owners dumped him there, presumably because they couldn't afford (or couldn't be bothered with) the heartworm treatment he was discovered to need.
The poor fellow was also suffering from a host of other ailments: upper respiratory and bladder infections, mild arthritis, enlarged prostate, some bad teeth, tapeworms, and elevated kidney and liver enzyme levels.
Thankfully, Carter has now gotten treatment and almost of his issues are now resolved!
He is still heartworm positive but, because of his past health issues, the vet doesn't think he should undergo the traditional harsh HW treatment so we're following the easier, gentler, but longer-term treatment plan.
In the meantime, he is enjoying life in his calm, leisurely way. He is generally a quiet boy, but will bark when someone is at the door or if the other dogs are causing a commotion.
Carter likes to go for walks and for rides in the car. He is 100% housebroken (and will hold it for hours!). And whoever said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks is a moron because Carter has now learned to "sit" and to use a dog door!
Mostly, though, he just likes to hang out with his people. When he gets in a playful mood, he will "talk" to you with cute little yaps and vocalizations.
You're such a kind person to foster all of these great animals. I'm currently awaiting someone to respond to my application. A couple I am interested in are being fostered by you! Thanks for sharing these pics! How do you think Carter would be with a 6yr old boy who wants a pal? - Marlee L., Thu, 10 Feb 2005 7:24AM
He is too cute! Hope he recovers well! - Lisa Z, Thu, 25 Nov 2004 5:09PM
