Here is Barney, an 18-month-old boy who is very active and playful.

He is a big boy: 16-1/2" tall and 17" long. He came to us weighing 32 lbs. (picture date 11/30)

But he has been on a diet and is now slightly under 29 lbs. He still has quite a bit of padding to lose, so he is working his way toward 25 lbs. (picture date 12/23). UPDATE: On 1/22/07 Barney weighed in at 26.3 lbs.

Barney was bought from a breeder at 10 weeks old but soon proved too active for his 85-year-old owner, so she surrendered him to an all-breed rescue at age 7 months.

He did fine in the rescue, proving to be amiable and affectionate with people and other dogs alike, but he was glum on adoption days and never got any suitable applicants. After almost a year without being adopted, the other group felt Barney would do better in a Rat Terrier-specific rescue, so they transferred him to us.

Now in a fosterhome where he is living in a home environment with lots of attention, he is doing great and is proving himself to be a really affectionate and sweet-natured boy.

He loves to play tug with his fostersister. And he loves toys of all kinds -- chewies, stuffed animals, balls, and ropes. He is rather "ADD" about them, though, and one doesn't hold his attention for very long.

Barney needs a family who, in addition to providing plenty of toys, keeps a neat house because he cannot resist picking up things he finds.... pens, slippers, magazines, hairbrush, the bathmat... Although he's very active and playful, he is really NOT hyper or rambunctious. He is inquisitive, alert, interested in everything around him, and always ready for an adventure.

Barney does GREAT with other dogs, and meets them with interest and friendliness. He loves to wrestle, chase, and play keep away with them. He is often very vocal in his play, but is gentle with the others even when the wrestling sounds heated.  Barney would definitely do best in a household with other dog(s) and would be lonely to not have any canine companions.

Barney is a real sweetheart and will be a terrific companion for someone able to give him the time and attention he craves.

Gentle, loving, fun, and handsome... What could be better?
