5to5VsInternacional

"The Miracle on Grass." (I just met Herb Brooks' son Dan today at the Abby Heat game.)

One ugly day, Saturday: cold and wet — but the game went on. Other than the north goal, it actually was a well-drained field.

Internacional started 2 men short, then one man short for the rest of the game (before losing 2 more to cards at the end.)

Down 2-1 at the half. Brenden scored on a 25-yarder late in the half — though we had many chances before that. James put one off the upper right corner, for example.

Internacional was skilled and quick to go on the counterattack. With Kyle standing in soft ground, he was handcuffed on most of their shots, which were very well placed. No easy shots — though defensive gaffs and miscommunication didn't help.

Their Ricardo Melgar had a hat-trick.

I think we were down 5-1 before we started our late comeback.

Brenden got a feed from Garry and Darren for a tap in, then he blasted a lefty from the right side of the box.

We were stunned — but alive!

Then Darren got a lefty from in close and Internacional must have finally been feeling their lack of subs.

We were getting a lot of corner kicks, which showed how much pressure we had in their end. On the next corner, Garry connected from the far post and headed it in for the tying goal.

We kept coming. James was flying up the middle with the ball and their #2 nailed him hard. The ref came running with the red card. Fidel, who already had a yellow, started jawing and drew his second yellow... which turned red.

We only had a few minutes after that and couldn't quite win it — which would have been absolutely incredible. As it was, it was merely miraculous!

The single point we gained may end up very valuable in playoff placement.

Yellow cards: Daniel Arrowsmith, Matt Jarvis

Sweet comeback!

Kyle's post-game notes: As ugly as the first 60 minutes were today, we have to take a lot of pride in the way we battled back in the final 30. We didn't quit on ourselves and got a big point.

I have to give a shout-out to Brenden Gillespie for going into beast mode and getting 3 big goals for us to start us rolling — and of course Darren and Garry for finishing off the comeback!

Let's build off of this and put forward the same battle level next week for a full 90 against the Bearcats.
