ANSWER: VULCANITE
I found this when I was cleaning one of my old jewelry drawers, and would like to identify it, I probably have had it over 30 years. The front carving is finely detailed. I don't think I have ever seen one quite as detailed as this. Any idea of country of origin would be greatly appreciated as well.

"Sheri is it vulcanite?? It's really pretty--" --Melissa Sands, 11/30/08
"I was thinking that, but I wanted to get a few opinions, since I wasn't 100% sure, it is light, and I have one piece of vulcanite, that is light like this. But you know what it's like when you have a piece sitting in a drawer for a long time, you never asked when you got it, because you weren't really buying it for any reason other than you liked it:)" --Sheri Weiss, 11/30/08
"According to What's It Made Of, Jet is very light weight, room temp. Jet leaves a brown streak when rubbed against white unglazed ceramic tile. Vulcanite is also room temp, light weight with a semi-glass surface. It also leaves a brown streak. Emits smell of burning rubber (sulphur) when warmed by rubbing. Both have a hot needle test, but we won't go there! Lava is cool and a matte surface. Test with a drop of lemon juice will effervesce with a loupe view. But wash right away! Bog Oak is light weight, matte surface and room temp. Visual test to see wood grains." --Lilly Vittetow, 11/30/08
