ANSWER: POSSIBLY A CHATELAINE
I was just listing this pin and wondered what the hook is on the back of the pin?  Any suggestions?  It doesn’t work to hang from a chain, but almost like a watch hook, but does that make sense?

"You could turn it upside down and clip it on a chain to wear as a [endatn--the coin would fall over it and dangle, that may look nice! Or, you could attach a chain and another brooch to it as is and use as a chatelaine..just thinking..." --Tracy Green, 11/04/08
"I think Tracy got it right, the hook would be for use as part of a chatelaine. ART may have sold it both ways, as a single and as a chatelaine set, I dunno. Sort of a convertible pin idea. Looks French-inspired with the French motto and the fleur de lis symbols. The lion and unicorn look familiar, but I can't place it offhand." --Linda Jo Mitchell, 11/04/08
"The motto looks like Latin to me. Rex is Latin for King. From looking at the closeup of the lettering, my guess is that it refers to Charlemagne, also known as Karolus, King of the Franks" --Elizabeth W., 11/04/08
