ANSWER: PERUVIAN SHAWL PIN
I have been holding on to this for a long time. Can anyone give me some info on it? It looks so different than the ones in the Chatelaines Cow, sort of primitive.

"Oh my goodness, that's incredible! The only intelligent thing I can say about it is that the tube hinge and c-clasp mean its probably antique. My other observation is: I can't imagine what the "theme" might be, that explains the connection between the peacock and the "charms" (pig, deer, and fish are the 3 I recognize...) It must be huge!" --Carrie Pollack, 02/28/09
"Your piece is definitely from South America - probably from Peru. I've had them before." --Beegee McBride, 02/28/09
"About 25 years ago I bought what the dealer called a "Peruvian shawl pin" from an antique shop in Kanab, Utah, which was silver colored metal with one blue glass or gemstone cabochon in it. It got misplaced on our move to our present house (15 years ago, though I haven't given up hope it will turn up yet!), but I do remember that it didn't have dangles or a pinback like Linda'a, but was fan-shaped, almost like a wide haircomb, with a single wide metal prong in the center to stick through the fabric, and that it was stamped with a row of charmingly primitive human figures across the "fan"--very similar stylistically to the animals on Karen's chatelaine." --Carrie Pollack, 02/28/09
"This south american or peru/inca shawl or blanket pin is called a Tupo or tupu, rather than a chatelaine. It is a beautiful one!" --Sharon Gross, 02/28/09
