ANSWER: PROBABLY REAL SCARAB, LINK TO SITE
I think I have found a real scarab pendant this weekend (actually 2, so maybe originally earrings?). I have been searching the web for more info and can't seem to find anything with actual pictures. Does anyone have a good site that they use?

"Lilly, could the "bugs" be glass. I've never actually seen a real scarab/bug used in jewelry. Here's a good link for scarab information: http://mcclungmuseum.utk.edu/permex/egypt/egs-text.htm" --Dotty Stringfeld, 12/18/07
"Great site. Wish I could send them a question. I suppose they could be glass but they have the irredescent green (that changes as it's moved) like real dung beetles. I cleaned them, that really brought the green & brown colors out. I louped them until my eyes were crossed. They're cool to the touch but not cold. There are slight differences and they are a lot lighter in weight then I would expect for glass. If I wasn't concerned with damaging one, I'd try popping it out of the setting to look at the back. But I won't." --Lilly Vittetow, 12/18/07
"Real Egyptian dung beetles are medium brown with a golden cast. The irridescent green real bugs used in Victorian jewelry are probably not in the scarab group, and I have read that they are native to South America. Your's look like the real S.A. bugs. Are you near a large museum with an insect exhibit? A staff person might identify them for you." --Rita, 12/18/07
"without seeing the underside I do not know if real or not....here is a link to one I sold http://imageevent.com/funkygq/jewelry/dungscarabbeetle" --Linda, 08/07/10
