ANSWER: PROBABLY BUTTONS WITH ADDED FOBS and USED AS CUFFLINKS

"Maybe they started out as buttons and later on the FOB mechanism was added? I don't know how they would be used when two of them are attached, unless you can wear them as cufflinks that way?" --Robin, 09/29/10
"They probably started out as very fancy buttons, and someone added the watch fob attachments. The fob attachments look to be a different karat than the gold of the buttons.Looks like the first photo is Carnelian, Amazonite, maybe Citrine, Amethyst. On the smaller end of the attachment, is that moveable, in other words, is it soldered on the one side, or is it 'moveable' able to be opened to slide through the 'U'. It does not look like the stones were removed in order to attach them and solder that one end. They would have had to be in order to solder them in. Or, they could have been cuff links that were attached by a cuff 'link' and those for some reason were removed. Fobs generally were made to show when worn, and these would be always facing down. I think someone probably used those fob attachments just to be able to use them in a shirt. They are fabulous though. Okay, I see in the last photo where that ring on the bottom, not the push in side, is an open ring which was added, so they were not originally on there. You can also see the difference in the color of the gold." --Dinah, 09/29/10
