ANSWER: MEXICO STERLING

Dianne Lavenburg
Sterling Set

It looked like it was from Mexico. The curved end of the clasp says "sterling".  I cannot make out exactly what the back of the earrings say but I see an "x" so I assume it is Mexico.  I know NOTHING about jewelry from Mexico.  I would think if it is "older" it would have more hallmarks and maybe say 925 instead of sterling but I don't know.  I see screw back earrings which should indicate it is at least somewhat older (60's-70's one would think) but I'm not even sure about that.
"I can read the Mark as "Mexico" but the "o" doesn't look too clear in your picture... I would guess late 60's early 70's... very pretty, and the stones look to be glass or a natural gem that I can't think of the name right now." --Jesse Moore, 08/21/10
"This is a beautiful set! “Sterling” verses “925” usually means it’s older. Take a look at the www.925-1000.com site. The older Mexican pieces will normally say Mexico Silver, then they used eagle marks, then in about 1979 they started with the letter/number system. This site will explain all this" --Nona Grampp, 08/21/10
"I have The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade & Hallmarks by Hougart. Under Early Marks it says, "During the first half of the 20th century, silver items produced in Mexico were often stamped simply 'silver' or 'sterling'. A location (Mexico, or a city such as Tasco was always included, sometimes ...purity." Sometimes stamped hang tags with more ID were attached and removed by the ower. Your item is definitely Mexico and Sterling." --Kathy Taylor, 08/21/10
"I think the stones are glass. One other thing that might be interesting is that I think there may be some numbers after "Mex" on the earrings. Not sure." --Dianne, 08/21/10
