ANSWER: LIKELY 14k WHITE GOLD
A deco bracelet, on the stem it is marked 14k, but I don’t know if that is a real mark, what do you think?
Barbara Diddle
"I would be surprised if that isn't gold. It looks like it to me and not usually the kind of thing that is faked. Then again stranger things have happened. Do you have a gold testing kit?" --Melissa Sands, 12/12/08
"Bracelet sure looks like authentic deco. How long is it? You know, I might have to see it in person, wear it, to be sure." --Linda Jo Mitchell, 12/12/08
"And I agree with Melissa on the deco bracelet. I believe the entire piece is 14K white gold. I have jewelry blue books that show pieces like this in real gold then also in sterling silver or chromium." --Robin Deutsch, 12/12/08
"Your bracelet is beautiful, I agree it is probably 14K. However, any gold karat stamp can be easily faked. It's amazing what a rawhide mallet and a easily obtained hallmarking stake can do! In the wrong hands these stamps are a really bad thing. Lots of unscrupulous dealers out there. Best to take anything your unsure of and have it checked by a jeweler. But yours really does look just fine to me. by the way, filigree bracelets from this era are highly reproduced too. http://www.jansjewells.com/reproduction.htm http://www.faycullen.com/ (any time the word "style" appears it's reproduction- sometimes you have to click through to the "details" to find out)" --Carolyn Sunday, 12/12/08
"Also, beware of anything that was karat stamped gold prior to 1920. Here are two examples, a blog that I wrote is the first example: http://blog.rubylane.com/node/643 and this French watch chain is another example: http://imageevent.com/sunday_best/frenchwatchchain how many folks do you think would sell the item just based on the hallmark- and not actually have it properly tested (especially if they don't know how to properly do the testing themselves). Anyhow, it's not all so clear cut, especially for stuff that was made before regulations were made more stringent." --Carolyn Sunday, 12/12/08
