ANSWER: AMBROTYPE
The next pictures are of a necklace with an old picture in it. I really don’t know how old this is, the chain looks very old, it has a weird way of attaching to the rest of the necklace., it can slide around on the necklace. (I’m not very good at describing things, hopefully the pics will help) LOL  The glass  between the picture and the frame is very very thick, I don’t know if the picture is imprinted on it or sits behind it.  And I don’t want to try to take it apart.  Anyone have any suggestions as to age.

"The photo necklace does look awkward, like perhaps it originally was on ribbons or a different style chain." --Linda Jo Mitchell, 12/12/08
"I have a photo pendant exactly like this one without the chain or the fancy extender. The photo appears to be an ambrotype. Here is some info: The Ambrotype photograph was made by coating a piece of glass with silver solution and exposing this to the image. The image is on the BACK of the glass and is sandwiched with another glass behind it. The back glass is coated with a black substance." --Linda Lombardo, 12/14/08
"This photo process was popular in the 1850's. If I remember correctly, the process dwindled in the 1860's as other methods were developed." --Linda Lombardo, 12/14/08
