ANSWER: CHINESE JADE SHOE CLIP
Betsy in Maine

Shoe Clip
"The Chinese piece is a shoe clip and is an antique, it dates to the late 19th early 20th century. Most likely it is Jade, these clips are most often made of Cinnabar too. The finding is silver plated brass." --Sharon, 10/03/10
"I am referencing the white jade shoe clip (you should be able to hold a light behind it and see inclusions in the material). It is a piece of early white jade and from the Qing Dynasty, mid 1800's..In the early 1900's, after the fall of the Dynasty, many of these jade plaques were made into jewelry such as brooches, pendants, and in your case, shoe clips (thanks Sharon). The great news here is that they are HIGHLY collectible!!!!!!I recently saw one made into a pendant and attached to a necklace with peking glass beads. It sold for $900." --Barbara J., 10/03/10
