Oscar's story is not the typical show dog story. Oscar was purchased by my son, as a pet from an excellent breeder, Shelly Heist of Rat Pack Kennels. My sister, Nancy, had purchased a rat terrier earlier that year from Shelly, and my son Matt just had to have one of his own.  I told Matt if he would save his money, he could purchase one. Well, Matt saved his money, and we have to live up to our part of the bargain. By the end of August 2000, Matt had his very own rat terrier, Oscar Diablo. In March 2001, our family went to the Carolina Classic in Charlotte, NC. At that show, we decided to have Oscar evaluated to see if he too could be a show dog. We had two judges evaluate Oscar, and both gave us the green light. I had always wanted to show dogs ever since giving up showing horses after having children. By June 2001, we were in the show ring. I will never forget going into the ring, "Male Mini Puppy," the first rat in the ring, and I was scared to death. I remember telling the judge, Karen Brancheau, "I have only shown horses, I don't know what I am doing." She told me relax, if you have shown horses, you can show dogs." Well, the rest is history; Oscar became a Champion by July 2001 and a Grand Champion in June 2002 with 13 Best of Breeds. Oscar is still Matt's pet, and my retired show dog. I tell people; "Oscar is 98% farm dog and 2% show dog," He is our loyal friend.
